Port St. Joe, any info would be great
Does anyone have any info on the Port St. Joe area? What are the schools like? I have two middle school age children. I haven't seen much on the forum in regards to this area. I live in Maine and would like to move to warmer weather, tired of the cold, snowy winters. Have lived in Central Fl before, but don't want to go there now that I have two kids. Looking for less populated!!!
Is there anyone down there looking to move to Maine? I have a house for sale!!!

I would still like to have information from someone who lives in the area, especially in regards to the PSJ school (middle and high). I have read the other posts, but it doesn't seem to give much inside information from anyone who has a child in the school system there? Is there ANYONE out there that has a child going to the PSJ school?

I live in Port St. Lucie.. I just wanted you to know that there is a Nuclear Plant about 15 miles either way around in Port St. Lucie --I wanted to make you aware of that because you have 2 children.. There is an increase of childhood cancers here about 500% over the national average of 12...I would not move here if I had the choice... I used to live in Kittery Maine....Love Maine but tooo cold.. I would look into Vero and above...

Rosko, thanks for the heads up, but I used to live in Port St. Lucie back in 1990, before I had kids. I was looking for information on Port St. Joe - Gulf County.
I am even thinking about Martin County, since the schools seem to be pretty good, and my husband and I have family down in that area.

I don't live there full time but I do own property there. I can't move to St. Joe for a few more years because of my work but I wouldn't hesitate to put my kids in school there. Everyone I have talked to says positive things about the schools. I would move now if I could.

Hi, dakoda, I was out of town last week and missed this post.
My younger son graduated from Port St Joe High School in May '07.
You've got to understand, this is a small, rural town. There were less than 100 kids in his graduating class.
PSJHS was a shock to him coming from his secular public high school in Denver, which has about 2,000 kids enrolled.
In PSJ, the separation between church and state is, um, a bit blurred.
Every meeting and assembly involves praying to Jesus, and Bibles were given out at graduation.
Having said all this, I loved the faculty and staff at PSJHS. They were kind, welcoming, helpful, and do the best they can with the resources they have. All three schools, the elementary, middle, and high school, sit together in a row not far from the water tower. They all work together.
I can't say enough good things about the soccer team and their coach, who warmly welcomed my kid on his first day. They were a tightly knit group, and every single kid on that team has gone on to college--a couple of them Ivy Leagues.
They do have AP and honors classes at PSJHS, and several of the kids use the online system for AP courses.
Florida Virtual School.
Here is the PSJHS website: PSJHS (broken link)
Here is the website for the local newspaper--it gives you a flavor for the town. The Star
Hope this helps--sorry I missed you last week.
