Insurance
just saw this site AdjustLoss.com and it is gaining momentum from Key west to the Pan Handle
Dynamic Public Adjusters Group, a Kendall-area company that helps homeowners try to get higher returns on insurance claims, started the petition in September under the name Floridians in Action. The group is now beginning to put together a board of directors so its work can continue long after the petition has been delivered.
Some of what the petition seeks: rate relief, tougher statewide building codes and a strong lobbying effort for a national catastrophe fund.

There is also a group called HAC that has done a lot to fight the insurance increases and working to get the Senate Bill 1980 repealed. Theie website is very informative, here's the link. http://hacfl.org/
I don't believe that a petition will help anymore after people voted on Amendmen 3 now it take 3/4 of registered voters to pass a petition through....people just keep voting away their rights.
I do have a question about the plan to for tougher building codes....what happens to the "Florida Cracker" house? It can't even begin to be updated to code or it would have to be rebuilt. Funny these homes have been here for 30, 40, 50 plus years through Hurricanes and now to helo the "insurance industry" they want us to pay to change them.

Interesting article, just concerned with that helps homeowners try to get higher returns on insurance claims, . This could lead to some forms of fraud by reaching for the higher return. If this becomes the norm, insurance companies either leave the state or raise policies.
I need to check Floridians in Action forum and see what is the real deal on this one...

Legislators' insurance proposals Interesting proposals...
• Let homeowners buy windstorm insurance to cover only the balance of their mortgage. - Rep. Thad Altman, R-Melbourne
• Use 1 cent from the state's 6-cent sales tax, or between $3 billion to $4 billion each year, to create the Super Catastrophe Fund. The fund would be used to stockpile building materials and dry food needed after a major storm. - Rep. Kevin Ambler, R-Lutz
• Let condo associations purchase insurance like homeowners. - Rep. Jennifer Carrol, R-Jacksonville
• Adopt a uniform statewide building code that would include the Panhandle. - Rep. Larry Cretul, R-Ocala
• Federalize windstorm coverage similar to the federal flood insurance program. - Rep. Don Davis, R-Jacksonville
• Expand Citizens statewide and let homeowners have the choice of opting out of windstorm coverage altogether. - Rep. Gayle Harrell, R-Stuart
• Reduce the threshold for reinsurers to access the CAT fund and create a program to certify storm-ready roofs. - Rep. Adam Hasner, R-Delray Beach
• Deregulate the insurance industry and do away with Citizens within five years. - Rep. Alan Hays, R-Umatilla
• Limit sinkhole claims and allow policyholders to opt out of purchasing sinkhole coverage. - Rep. John Legg, R-Port Richey
• Create a state reinsurance pool funded by the balance of the catastrophe fund and other state money and return surplus money to taxpayers in years without a major storm. - Rep. Mitch Needleman, R-Melbourne
• Bar insurance companies from purchasing reinsurance from parent companies and prohibit insurers from canceling policies during hurricane season. - Rep. Ralph Poppell, R-Vero Beach.
• Force insurance companies that sell other lines of insurance in Florida to also sell homeowners insurance. - Rep. John Quinones, R-Kissimmee
• Force insurers to base policies on risk, not geographic location. Also double to $500 million the hurricane mitigation program that provides homeowners with state money to make their homes more hurricane-safe. - Rep. Julio Robaina, R-Miami
• Create a Rate Reduction Authority that would provide initial windstorm coverage for all homes and businesses in the state. After the predetermined amount, private insurers would step in and cover the excess loss. The state agency would be required to lower property insurance rates. - House Democrats
Compiled by staff writers Michael C. Bender, Randy Diamond and Dara Kam.

here is something interesting.
you may remember when state farm withdrew its proposed increase and came in later with a lower increase....well, they are charging an additional charge on their auto policies to go towards the state fund. 1 of my sons who is 19, in college (part time) and working full time and doesnt own a home just got hit with a 1% increase for the cat fund on his auto policy.
very sneaky.
I read that all insurance policies will get a 1% increase per year for 10 years. When I read it I thought that meant h.o. policies but I guess it means ALL policies.

Sunrico it seems that you have a good handle on insurance issues. If we were to pressure our legislators towards a move in one direction or another what direction would you pick.
I intend on being vocal with my representatives on this issue so if anyone has good info or sources please share

Shores9,
I did my presentation in person and I continue to e-mail. If I'm paying for someone salary (that means they work for me) I will let them know how I feel. Please voice your opinion, join a local or state group that fights for your rights and views.
We allowed corruption to take place, we should take aggressive action to correct it. Is our responsability as state residents.

here is a story....right after hurricane charlie came I e-mailed Tom Gallaghers office to talk to him about how I think the insurance companies will take advantage of this situation. I never spoke to him but a woman named Vickie ToGoode called me and said she was gallaghers assistant. We spoke for an hour as she explained that Gallagher would never cave to the insurance industry. (that didnt happen)
Its good for people to get involved with this issue to help resolve it. according to a letter I recieved from the governors office in response to a letter I had written last year,,,The government was soliciting advice from the public. This is where the state web site comes in handy.
Alot of what the public is doing right now needed to happen over the past few years. better late than never I guess.

**This would be a great idea if in FACT they would use the money as it s meant to be used, not like the Lottery money that was suppose to go to schools
• Adopt a uniform statewide building code that would include the Panhandle. - Rep. Larry Cretul, R-Ocala
*** How will help lower insurance premiums? Also how do you bring al the old Florida Cracker homes up to code without bankrupting their owners?**
• Expand Citizens statewide and let homeowners have the choice of opting out of windstorm coverage altogether. - Rep. Gayle Harrell, R-Stuart
**** What an idea....now we can have even more houses draped in blue tarps because the opted out of coverage to help lower their premiums to afford to stay in their blue tarp house***
• Reduce the threshold for reinsurers to access the CAT fund and create a program to certify storm-ready roofs. - Rep. Adam Hasner, R-Delray Beach
*** More ways to make it easier for the insurance industry so they can keep reaping their billions in profits and let the state cover the rest***
• Deregulate the insurance industry and do away with Citizens within five years. - Rep. Alan Hays, R-Umatilla
****Yes we can see how that helped lower our cable and utility rates, ow the insurance industry can charge us what ever they please***
• Limit sinkhole claims and allow policyholders to opt out of purchasing sinkhole coverage. - Rep. John Legg, R-Port Richey
***I agree in limiting sinkhole claims by actually "defining" what a sinkhole is, not by allowing people to opt out of MORE coverage*** (then we can have blue tarps covering not just our rooftops but the gaping holes in the ground)
• Bar insurance companies from purchasing reinsurance from parent companies and prohibit insurers from canceling policies during hurricane season. - Rep. Ralph Poppell, R-Vero Beach.
***Finally a plan that requires the insurance industry to do what they should be doing!****
• Force insurance companies that sell other lines of insurance in Florida to also sell homeowners insurance. - Rep. John Quinones, R-Kissimmee
****NO MORE CHERRY-PICKING*****
• Force insurers to base policies on risk, not geographic location. Also double to $500 million the hurricane mitigation program that provides homeowners with state money to make their homes more hurricane-safe. - Rep. Julio Robaina, R-Miami
***Mitigation does not work! If you can't afford to pay for your insurance how can you afford to pay to update your home! What they don't tell you is you have to put out the entire amount, have the work done and completed, then APPLY for the grant. Their is only enough money in this fund to cover 50,000 of the 4.8 million homesteaded homes in Florida. (this amounts to one county in Forida)
• Create a Rate Reduction Authority that would provide initial windstorm coverage for all homes and businesses in the state. After the predetermined amount, private insurers would step in and cover the excess loss. The state agency would be required to lower property insurance rates. - House Democrats
**Again make it easier on these multi-Billion dollar insurance companies**

These are the proposals, but if you have a better plan get it to the authorities and make it count. I must ask, How do you fix the insurance problem? We need ideas to resolve the problem not complains we have sufficient whiners in the forum. Is not an easy one, but the solution to the problem will not benefit all, some will be impacted on a negative way. I do hope and pray that the solution is well planned and results are realistic and not a table or drill exercise...
