I’ve heard that Central Florida summers are not as hot as the rest of FL, is this true? Not that those hot, humid summers would keep me here in this cold, dreary, depressing place. Does anyone know anything about Gainesville, Jacksonville or Tallahassee areas – not directly in those cities but outside of them? Any nice little towns commuting distance to these “bigger” cities.

the cold is worse... at least in Chicago... I am going back to Florida in november... especially after this winter... ouch!
Then again I don't mind the heat at all, and I grew up on the beach...
I've been here going on 3 years now and this winter was the last straw... definitely depressed, and next winter is supposed to be worse, usually they come in 2s or 3s in a row.

Maybe people that grew up here just don't see the difference, or are used to it or something, definitely effects me though, so can't stay, even though I have a good job, it isn't worth the 6-7 months of what I would call crap weather, mid october- mid april.

Even the locals here this year say its bad though, but... it was enough to scare me off haha

OK so winter is worse. Thanks for all the feedback.

But I have never been a "beach person" or a "hot weather person." What I DO LOVE is sunshine and swimming (in pools or springs, like in Fla.), which is lacking up north.

I am just so worried that I will get sick of that Florida heat all over again. At that point, I guess I would have to win the lottery in order to afford to live in San Diego...............

yeah you can't beat the sunshine

yes its hot, and yes it rains quite a bit... but, it is sunny also, and the rain is usually just in the afternoons...

not like up north where it is grey day after day after day, and you can't go outside b/c there is nothing to do.
personally, I run races, so like half the year has snow or ice on the ground, or too cold for my tastes. gotta change that. I can sweat all day, but when you are concerned with slipping on ice...it is a whole different story.

There is absolutely no place that compares to San Diego weather or the beaches out there. Home prices are outrageous as are most decent places to rent. You get paid more there, though & its a younger atmosphere.

Of course winter is worse right now; it's March!!! & everyone is sick of it who lives past the Mason Dixie line. Ask the same question in August about the heat.

What is going to make YOU happy?

If you are not a beach person or hot weather person, what is drawing you back to FL?

Figure out a place that is going to rest your soul. Don't rely on others to make that decision for you.

For me, family trumps weather almost 99% of the time. Yet others could care less if they see their family. My children are growing up near cousins & grandparents. We can take vacations to the beach.

Good luck. Do what is right for you.

Gainesville and Tallahassee will be worse than Jacksonville. Jacksonville is on the water so will get a sea breeze. Tally and Gainesville will be one of the hottest places in Florida like Orlando, no sea breeze in any of theses places. Any place not on the ocean will be hotter than any places on the ocean/gulf. I think Orlando hit 100 last summer. Remember when its 100 the feels like temp is much higher because of the humidity.

121804- LOL that's exactly what I meant tho'.. what heat?? Yes we do have our days here in western NY.. but not many. Can anyone honestly say they've had MORE than 3 days of heat in this area? I've lived here all my 38 years, and once, and only once to I remember our creek drying up and having water restrictions, and that was when I was a kid. We couldn't fish, no water, and couldn't run the hose. The neighbors had a pool, but we weren't 'good enough' to play with them. It was a sad time not having the creek and having to listen to the neighbors in the pool! But that is the ONLY time I ever remember water restrictions in this area. I remember some cool, rainy summers.. I think the overall theme here on this thread, is the bad part of FLA is the humidity and the bad part of 'up north' is the grey, dreary days. If you've never lived up north here, and I"m in WNY, I can't stress enough how depressing they can be. Day after day of grey, cloudy days, with cold/snow/and -or rain. Sunday was sunny, I took the boys out in the yard for about 20min, had to come in the wind got so bitter, and all day yesterday and today, NOTHING but grey, dismal days. Ok, I'm beating a dead horse. LOL Well, at least we have a casino.. now if only I had the $$ he he he

Gainesville and Tallahassee are cooler than SW FL (such as Cape Coral and Fort Myers) right? I've been to N. Fort Myers in August for 2 weeks at a time and didn't have a problem. The question is: Where are the jobs? Which area would have a better job market?

I'd take oppressive humid days any day over dreary, cold winters.

Although talked about before, always very interesting.

I believe that almost all of the country has a few months out of the year that are a bit more difficult to enjoy......either a few months of hot weather, or a few months of colder weather.
Here in western NY, we have a more extreme climate, thus the reason for my buying in Florida.

Of the very few micro-climates that have year round near perfect weather, they have already been "discovered", and are so desirable the real estate costs are out of this world. Malibu comes to mind.....great weather, (except for the mudslides ).

So, if I am correct, if most of the country has to have a few more uncomfortable months, for me, I'll take a few months of hot and humid over 5 months of cold. Good bye NY, hello Florida......(for good in 1188 days).
