I'm trying to figure out just how far north of the crystal river power plant the new one would be. I'm a landowner in inglis, florida will it be north of me?

Almost the entire City of Port St. Lucie, and most of the beachfront condos in southern St. Lucie County and northern Martin County, are within the evacuation zone of the St. Lucie nuclear plants (two of them, side by side). None of them are depressed or declining -- much to the contrary.

Other than the periodic testing announcements and wailing sirens from the giant warning stations, no one would even know the plants exist.

Patrick Moore, one of the original founders of Greenpeace, spent many years working and lobbying against nuclear plants. He and many others were convinced that nuclear energy would result in some sort of holocaust.

Recently, he has completely reversed himself, and now supports nuclear energy as the safest and cleanest solution for our energy needs. Read the entire article here:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...041401209.html
I can't quote the article due to copyright rules, but to paraphrase Moore, Three Mile Island did exactly what it was supposed to do -- contain the problem and protect the populace. However, it frightened him and others, and public pressure has prevented any new nukes since then.

Those who still believe that nuclear plants are dangerous are victims of the earlier propaganda and would do well to take a lesson from one of the men responsible for spreading that propaganda. Refuse to be brainwashed and think for yourself!

This is true. I have trained on this for over 20 years. The safest and cleanest are the nuclear plants. Power is needed bad in Florida, I for one would like to see a nuclear plant over a fossel plant any day.

Nuclear Power Plants release strontium 90 radiation out..I ask you is radiation clean and safe for human beings??? Don't you realize that it is a byproduct of nuclear energy (by mixing plutonium and uranium)..Since you both seem to know so much then you must realize this --yes.... The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) states that the only strontium 90 radiation in the environment today is from Nuclear Power Plants--yes-- and causes soft tissue bone and leukemia cancers... I also live in Port St. Lucie and we have an increase of childhood cancers 355% compared to the national average of 12% and 500% increase in breast cancer to the national average of 8%...Wow..They tested these children's teeth-- they used the same method our government formulated back in the days of the above ground testing of Nuclear weapons, before the Nuclear test ban Treaty signed in 1963.. Strontium 90 radiation absorbs itself to the calcium of the bones and teeth... They tested all these children in Port St. Lucie who have cancer and found that they have 10 to 100 times the amount of strontium 90 in their bodies.. How is this possible, it can't be from the above ground testing done years before these children were born, and also may I point out that in the years that the St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant emitted higher levels of (SR90) Strontium 90 in St. Lucie County there were higher rates of cancer diagnosed here...I Wonder...
Also, 95% of our Toxic waste comes from Nuclear Plants and it takes 450 years for it to break down and become safe supposedly. I ask you whose back yard is it going to and when they fill that back yard whose backyard are they going to next???
I ask you how does the (NRC) Nuclear Regulatory Commission know what is safe for these Nuclear Power Plants to emit??? How can they know?? I ask you is any form of radiation safe... I don't think so......
I would love to move out of St. Lucie County--I can't sell my house--and I wouldn't sell it to someone who has children..
There are 104 Nuclear Power Plants in this Country and counting... and 450 in the World....
The (CDC) Center for Disease Control came to St. Lucie County because there is a cancer cluster here and they tested for something like 655 chemicals and found nothing, but they never tested for strontium 90 radiation..I WONDER..................DON'T YOU???????????????

Robert and Deborah Smith is on a distinguished road
Robert and I live in Levy County. We built our home on 40 acres now we will have this power plant at our back door and we can not do anything about it. We will be living 6800 feet from the Actual Reactors. Does anyone know any family that lives within this feet? What answers can we get about health, and what is this going to do to our property value? We have put everything we have into our home this was to be a retirement. We are scared...

Your post seems very intriguing but can you please post some of the sources you got that data from? Not that I'm defending the plant in any way, because I would never live near it and do think that it can cause potential problems like the ones you mention. I'm just wondering if the stats you are giving happen to be valid.

Your property is well over a mile from the new site. My husband and I grew up within eye shot of two cooling towers and have owned homes in the same area over the past several years. No one in our family has weird deformities or any sickness... unless you call being a lazy teenager a disorder!! (my oldest boys, hahaha)

My husband worked as a controls engineer inside the plant for a few years before moving to a power plant here in FL. He only had radiation reading high enough to placed in containment once... after eating bananas. LOL (true story).

Yes, there is a TON of opposition to this power plant from the locals. Although some favor it as a source of economic development, quality of life increase. Spent fuel rods are transported by the Federal government and you should check with them for their policy regarding this practice.
