Hello I'm Anglo Canadian with Aspergers and a hopeful Writer, now I wanted to create a Historical mystery series set in 1980's Miami,

My main character is a P.I who is the most costly in the USA, he is a former Vietnam Vet who learned his fighting and killing skills in armed forces. He fees are the highest but there are types of payment he wouldn't take Blood Money, Dope and Dope Cash. He hate dope with such as passion this due when he was a Soldier back in Vietnam some of squad mates got hooked on junk,

The problem I have is that hard time finding source info on the Cocaine Cowboy era, books and such.

I want to be honest in writing this timeframe, Miami in 1980's I'm going to make some people upset with showing some light on some bad truths of that timeframe.

My advice would be to watch all the episodes of Miami Vice from beginning to end, I think you can watch them for free online. Also read some of Edna Buchanan's books. She saw it all, the good, the bad and the ugly. Mostly the bad and the ugly.

As someone who lived in South Florida during the 1980s, both in Miami and Ft. Lauderdale, it was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

You might get more replies if you ask in the Miami forum. I don't know what hard truths you can tell that would shock any of the old timers from South Florida, though. So much of the bad stuff was out in the open. Crazy times.

It was Hotel Scarface that gave me the idea for Cocaine Hotel(working title), also he is based in a Penhouse of luxury Hotel of the 1980's Miami. Acording to Crime Writing books that I checked out real P.I.'s rent and don't unsally have there own headquarters. If Class's Fee's are so high it would be cheaper to live and work out of a Penthouse.

I need to Florida in 1980's requirements for being a P.I.?, and the Police's view's and aditudes towards P.I.'s?.

I wonder if the Miami Herald has an archive you could access online of old articles?

There are several docs on Netflix about this era.

South Beach was a ghost town. We used to stay in the beach hotels for like 10-20 bucks a night and have punk and other rock shows there. We got kicked out of one of our favorite venues when cocaine people decided to take it over.

You might contact Miami History museum and the Wolfsonian to get an idea of stuff that was there, etc.
It was an extremely fascinating dump with some unique architecture and kitsch that many like me loved!

There is a good article about this time period in a November 81 issue of Time, and don’t remember when but the Wall StreetJournal investigated the dirty drug money in 82 among other times of course. That’s when they started to take notice.

Google Alex Daoud, Edna Buchanan’s stuff, Tommy’s Deck bar ,Cocaine Cowboys doc...

A source for hotels might be some old Miami postcards.

Okay if I run across any sources for anything else I’ll let you know.

We used to hang out at a place called Flynn’s Ocean 71. There are some posters from there online if you want some ideas for the punk culture that you mentioned in another thread. Our fanzine was called Suburban Relapse. The editor worked for the phone company and it covered local bands and political issues. Just in case you wanted to add that kind of local color.

I’ve seen old Miami maps on eBay.
