Come on people, please I really need some help here. What are the workers called? Floor layers, Tile layers, Carpet layers. Anyone know who I can even call to talk about work.

I don't know a thing about that area. There are no unions for this work that I am aware of for you to call. Look up contractors in that region.

Thanks Curt,
I know there are no unions. I have tryed to look up contractors and all the wording I use comes up not found. That is why I asked the question what would you call the title floor layer in Fl. Gainsville seems like the largest city to go to, unless you know of another city? I know the east coast of Fl, but I am looking for country living and ocean too. I surf, fish and hunt, other then that I have to work. Thank you for answering my thread.

If you want to go surfing, you don't want to live in Levy County or pretty much anywhere else on the Gulf coast. You need to head to the Atlantic coast.

JMT, talk to me! What no Surfing on the west coast????????? What do you mean???? It will be my first visit to the west coast. Do you know anything about Levy or the work there or the big cities I should look at? I have been told the panhandle was great for Surfing.
Thank you for answering.

Levy County
I live in Gainesville and know the area pretty well.
Levy (pronounced Lee-vee) County is very rural. The major towns are Chiefland, Bronson (the county seat), Williston, and Cedar Key. There are a lot of people that work in Gainesville that commute from Bronson and Williston as it's VERY expensive to live in Gainesville/Alachua County. Chiefland is the biggest town.
There aren't many "cities" other than Gainesville that are easy to commute to from Levy County, except Ocala (from Williston).
The fishing is great in the area (saltwater fishing off Cedar Key and from the Waccasassa River). There seems to be a lot of hunters in the area. Much of the land is owned by timber companies, and there are vast stands of pines. There is also a lot of swamp land. The coastal area is very low, and JMT is correct--there are very few beaches in Levy County. The only "beach" I know is an undesirable, tiny, man-made swimming area in Cedar Key. You'd be hard-pressed to find any waves there, except from the wake of gas-spewing fishing boats. It's nasty.
The beaches in the Panhandle ARE nice, and I'm sure there are surfing opportunities there, although the Atlantic usually has much bigger waves. It's a long trip from Levy County all the way around the Big Bend to the Panhandle area - certainly not a day trip.

BUP41800, now that was something for me to read. I really don't want to live in Gainsville, just need contacts for work and if there is work for a floor layer. I am very sad to hear about the surfing. I don't know where else to look in FL where I can have my cake and eat it too! Country living, Fishing and have Surfing.........must have waves and beaches!!! I was going to start in Cheifland and drive to Gainsvill and then head to the ocean, maybe run down the coast a bit. Where I live now it takes me an hour to do everything even work. ( meaning each thing is an hour away ) Sad again, but work here is not good...How about Clearwater anything there? Thank you so much for sharing all that info with me. Do you have any ideas for someone like me?
Thank you again.............

Yeah you'll be hard-pressed to find what you're looking for in Florida. If you want inexpensive country living, you're not going to find it in areas where you can surf. Clearwater is a lovely town, but it's in the middle of urban h*ll (Pinellas County) where it takes 30 minutes to find a parking place. And there's no surfing there, either. You really need to head to the Atlantic coast for surfing--the Gulf is very shallow and just doesn't produce many waves. But I'm afraid you'll discover that the cost of living on the Atlantic coast will be prohibitive. Well, maybe not in Fort Pierce, but in Fort Pierce what you don't pay in real estate you'll pay in home security systems.

Levy County is still "old Florida" - very southern. I wouldn't go around mentioning "union" anywhere in Levy County, in the Panhandle, or North Central Florida. There are some cautiously active unions in the bigger cities, but you'll be branded a Yankee trouble maker if you start talking about unions in these areas.
Even in Orlando, many employers won't have anything to do with union labor. FWIW, I have personally seen Unions use some pretty dirty tricks, even on its own members. One example involves the use of Union Contracts, where they get an unsuspecting employer to sign a Union Contract. The Union rep. will make all kinds of misrepresentations, and the employer signs a one page "contract", which appears real simple, but references a large "addendum" that is often only given out upon request. This addendum will tie an employer's hands until he drowns in his own blood. I've seen an Electrician, who was a former union member himself, who started his own sub-contracting business get royally screwed by signing on with a Union. All he was trying to do is give union employees a chance to work for him - to pay back his Union and show some loyalty. His once successful company went bankrupt. He went bankrupt.
As much as I despise Amway, if I was given a choice between signing a contract with Amway or with a Union, I'd sign up with Amway and gladly rejoice at their juice-squirting meetings after seeing what Unions do.
On another note - Levy County is a sleepy county with some small towns - probably not a whole lot of work for a contractor who specializes in laying flooring. I'm not aware of any wealthy areas in Levy County. But, there is probably work for contracors who are more generalized in their work.
