Hi - I'm a new graduate in the medical field, with plans to leave too-cold Canada and set up practice in Florida. I currently have a few options and hope for any insight you can offer here. I'm single, enjoy cycling, nature, vibrant, liberal communities where I can meet other people. Low crime rate is important, of course and it would be nice to have cultural amenities and beach close by. I'm looking for mixed age ranges and an economy not solely dependent on tourists/snowbirds. Ideally, I'll eventually raise a family here... My options right now: Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Ocala, Niceville, Port Orange, Titusville, Zephyrhills. Do any of these towns bit the bill? Thanks!

Jacksonville may be your best bet based on your criteria. I wouldn't exclude Tampa or Orlando because of the tourist perception unless you are looking for something smaller. There are tons of medical people and engineers in the Orlando area.

Thanks - I'll investigate Jacksonville further. My first choice would be Tampa or St. Pete but I'm limited to these aforementioned communities for the foreseeable future.

Jacksoville has a thriving medical community thanks to the mayo clinic expansion.

If liberal politics is important to you, I would suggest Gainesville which is 45 minutes north of Ocala. It is home to the university of Florida and stands hospital, one of the highest rated teaching hospitals in the state.

Gainesville might fit your bill.

St. Pete would be perfect, though. Not sure what your budget is, but it would satisfy everything on your list. Look up crime rates though, because parts of St. Pete can be a little hit or miss. Really great cycling community in the area as well. Good concert venues and amenities if you are into it.

You sound like a cool person. I think you'd find a lot to like!

Florida cities are spread out, so if you can afford it, there are very safe areas to live and raise a family in all of the major cities. I'd say Jacksonville out of that list.

Thanks, kombuchaluchador. Right now, my options are confined to working in Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Ocala, Niceville, Port Orange, Titusville, Zephyrhills. Jacksonville appealed at first, but I just read elsewhere in these forums that it was murder capital of Florida and has really bad traffic. (Then again, there's nothing worse than the traffic here in Toronto...)

There is a "bad part of town" in Jacksonville that if you avoid you are fine. The southern part of Jacksonville towards St. Augustine is very upscale and wealthy.

Ocala is within commuting distance of Gainesville. I really think Gainesville could be ideal for your requirements.

Tallahassee like Gainesville is a liberal college town that could work. It has rolling hills which is unusual for flat florida and is the state capitol.

Setting up your own practice is quite an endeavor. I assume that you have researched this thoroughly and therefore yielded your list of options.

Jacksonville would easily be the least culture shock for you (though still likely a shock). It has the most amenities of them all and the "murder capital" shouldn't dissuade you. It's perfectly fine in a majority of the region. Traffic is a joke compared to a city like Toronto so you shouldn't be too worried about it.
