Hello all.
My family and I are relocating from NH to Florida this fall. We were looking into the Palm Coast area .. due to low crime, and from everything I am reading it seems to be quiet but close enough to the bigger cities. Only downfall that I am reading about is the lack of jobs. I am okay to travel a little for weekend trips/malls/Disney .. whatever. But would be ideal to work close to home. We are all in our early to mid 20's. We are thinking of renting a home for about a year first before buying/settling to one place with such a big move. We are taking a trip to visit different areas in May and I was just looking to get some suggestions on where to look? Maybe around the Palm Coast area?? But open to other suggestions as well! Safety is a big must (though everywhere has crime) but the less the better obviously And trying to stay away from the too expensive areas as like I said we are all young and are starting out in our careers. Thank you in advance for all of your help!!! We are so excited about this next adventure!!

Honestly, you are better off a little bit north closer to st. Augustine that opens up a lot more jobs in South Jacksonville for a reasonable commute. Palm Coast is great for a Retired person that doesn't need to work but you are going to be in a world of hurt looking for work in palm coast. Many people have to do long commutes to daytona beach or jacksonville for work.

Florida is sprawled out, so any major city here has many very safe areas to live. I live in Orlando in Dr. Phillips. I've left my garage door open overnight multiple times (not on purpose), I sleep with the gate to the backyard open, so my dogs can go in and out as they please. But then there are parts of Orlando where this would not fly at all. This is the same scenario for most of Florida or even all of Florida. I assume you are wanting a small town given you think you will like Palm Coast?

I don't know what your career fields are in, but generally speaking, most of the well paying employment opportunities in FL are in the major metropolitan areas of Miami, Tampa, Orlando and Jacksonville. Is there a specific reason why Palm Coast piqued your interest? Palm Coast has almost no good employment opportunities. I live and work in Jacksonville and one of my coworkers commutes to our downtown Jacksonville office from Palm Coast two days a week and works from home three days a week. It works well for her, because her commute is 1 hr and 20 mins each way, which of course, is way too much for daily commuting. I wouldn't recommend it, though. Why make your life harder than it needs to be? And not all employers allow it.

I too would recommend St Augustine which is attracting a younger creative/artsy population due to it's affordability and proximity to Jacksonville.

Thank you all for your help! Where in Jacksonville do you recommend? And what areas should we try to avoid?

That is kind of what we are trying for .. but to be close to work and shopping and what not would be nice as well. We know of someone from palm coast that really loves it , who is also from NH so we just kind of based our searching on that area and with our research it seems like we would enjoy it .. but did not realize that we would be so far from work opportunities!

You will find tons of people from the New England area in Jacksonville and St Augustine. It seems to be the area that attracts people from that region up north a lot. I know in my apartment community there were more Red Sox fans than anything else for example during baseball season last summer. In my building alone there is my family(MA), people upstairs(MA), people across from me(VT), and downstairs(NY) for people from the Northeast among 6 apartments I have chatted with. Many of them have been in Florida for a couple decades too, so obviously this has been a thing for a while.

If you're looking for safer areas check out the St Augustine/Northern St John's County area. I'd recommend Stonehurst Plantation off of SR210 just west of I-95 in North St Augustine. It's very safe with easy access to I-95 into Jacksonville's southside which is full of employment options.
