HI. I don't live in Ocala, but it's a place of interest for me, too. Until one of the Ocala residents comes along, Moderator cut: link

Ive been to Ocala and its not so cheap anymore. Would you be interested in a mobile home? Many of them are bigger and nicer than those $100k houses and you can get acreage lot along with the mobile home

I wouldn't buy a mobile home in Florida due to hurricanes. Seems like one of the worst states to buy a mobile home, besides Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana (same reason - hurricanes), etc.

Ocala's fairly expensive, but these are in Florida terms. Compared to the rest of the US, the home prices are pretty average, and $250k for example would get you a nice place. Heck, even $200k will.

Your range is $100-300k and you can definetly satisfy that in Ocala. Have fun!

If you wait until May, you probably find a cheap summer sublet in Gainesville once school lets out.

Default I've heard Ocala is getting pricey. Places you might try are...

Land O' Lakes, Lakeland, Lake Wales, Spring Hill and Brooksville...not necessarily in that order Good luck in your hunt for a new home town.

I don't want to over-argue with you; however, a $100k house in Ocala is probably either in the ghetto or suffering serious issues. Heck, an $100k house in most areas is probably under those problems. Sorry.

You need a little update on home prices. The US median is $230k now, so $200k is reasonable now, and so is $250k, assuming you're in a decent area.

If you can afford a $200k house then it becomes an option. I dont know if the OP is able to afford $200k, he stated a budget of between $100k and $300k depending what type of jobs are found. To afford $200k a single person needs to be making $80k gross annually, else he will become "house poor"

If he said he could afford 300k why would he not be able to afford $200k?

Default information update

my wife and I are going to retire and we like the ocala area. we want to retire in the area between gainsville and just south of ocala. there for jobs will not be needed for us. we will be doing a lot of fishing ,target shooting and maybe even learn how to golf. we have been to the area before and like it. we have a general idea of home values there, but we just don't know the whole area , that is why we are asking for your advice.

Thanks again Bob
