The Okaloosa County Airport currently serves over 520,000 passengers each year with direct service to Atlanta (Delta / ASA), Dallas (American Eagle), Houston (Continental), St. Louis (American Eagle), Memphis (Northwest) and Tampa (Gulfstream). Destin is served by two airports. Airline service is available through the Fort Walton Beach airport, which is actually located on nearby Eglin Air force Base, a 30-40 minute drive from Destin. This facility is also known as the Okaloosa Regional Airport and the airport identifier is VPS . For security purposes private and corporate aircraft are prohibited from landing at this airport. . The Destin Airport , also known as Coleman Kelly Field, is located in the heart of Destin only minutes away from our beaches, restaurants and harbor. Direct air service is provided by Wings Air from Atlanta's Gwinnett Airport to the Destin Airport which can also accommodate all corporate jets except larger airline equipment. Airport transportation, including limousines, car rentals, Destin airport shuttle service and cruise line companies. |

We prefer Okaloosa Regional Airport (VPS)

VPS is the closest and most convenient, but from CLT is would (or used to) require a connection through hubs that can be very busy and limited in available seating for the best fares. Closest direct flights would be into PNS (Pensacola) and may have better fares. The drive to-from Ft. Walton was under an hour, so a bit further for Destin. As a former airline employee, I've used both. The service at VPS has gotten better since I left the airlines in 2001 and the airport had a nice facelift. If you're looking for most convenient then VPS is the airport. If you're looking for best fares, you'll have to shop both VPS and PNS for your timeframe.

What Caro said. Hubs complicate things.
When I lived in the area (Port St Joe), I always chose according to airfare: it might be PFN (Panama City), or VPS, or even PNS. Of course, gas was cheaper two years ago--that's a consideration, too. |
