Michael- Based on the parameters you indicated, Vero Beach would probably be a decent choice. Forget about Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie. Jupiter would not be a bad choice but then you're further south and in Palm Beach county which tends to be more expensive. But also more job opportunities. I recently moved from Jupiter to St. Augustine. A smaller city, very close to the ocean. School system was rated number 4 in the state last year. About 30 miles south of Jacksonville where there are lots of job opportunities. As a Jew, I found it a bit frustrating (as in many areas of Florida, especially north) as the Jewish community is not as large or active as in south Florida. Although Jacksonville does have a fairly active one. If you want further info, email me at sahoffice@bellsouth.net. Btw, I am originally from NYC and have lived in Florida since 1976.

Michael,
I live in Palm Bay which is right in the middle of the areas you are looking at. If I were to choose one of them to best fit your needs, I would go with Sebastian or Vero Beach. First of all, Viera is nice, new and as someone else stated, a lot of Wide Open Spaces. A city built on an old ranch. The other reason I am suggesting Vero is that you are looking for some SPACE. MUCH of the other areas, especially newer housing... are built in the subdivisions where people are closer. Just take a look at a google map. Most everything is 1/4 acre lots. It will be a little more difficult to find that peaceful 1 acre you talk about... and be prepared to pay for it too.... in addition to a house. So for space I would suggest Vero or Sebastian. On the other hand, there is always places like Grant-Valkaria or Micco. Small RURAL communities south of Melbourne/Palm Bay and north of Sebastian. Some of the homes there are on larger lots. Not much in the way of amenities, but close enough to Melbourne/Palm Bay or Sebastian/Vero for shopping. OH, and mowing the lawn every 2 weeks... NOT in summer... it WILL be WEEKLY !!! It rains much and it grows FAST. Last edited by bcfarmlady; 05-11-2008 at 08:55 AM.. Reason: adding more info |

Personally,I don't think you'll ever find that kind of land with a nice home not far from the beach for that price unless it's an existing old, outdated home in an undesirable area. You're going to have to decide what you're willing to trade off. You can't have it all for that price......it's impossible.
Viera is a VERY good fit for us,but it's all in what you want and what you're content with. All you can do is check it out in person and decide for yourself where it would be a good fit for you. Like I said, Best Of Luck! |

Michael,
Like most of the others have said and from your original post. I think Vero Beach or Sebastian would be a great area for you and your family. My parents live in Sebastian and I lived in Vero for about 15 years until 2004 when I met my wife and we had to leave due to the fact she is in the military and we move around alot. But I tell you the first day the wife gets out of the military we're heading back to Vero Beach !!! We can't wait to get back !! Michael another thing I'd suggest is not to go any further south than Vero Beach. Ft.Pierce is the pits. Most south Floridians are heading up to the Treasure Coast to escape South Florida. BTW congrats on the arrival of you baby, I to am expecting our second child due June 4 via C-section. Good luck with your search. |

As a pharmacist you should easily be able to afford beachside in Melbourne Beach/Indian Harbour Beach/Satellite Beach. Stole a city school ranking off of another post (see below) and Brevard county has 6 of the top 20 cities as far as schools go. I would go with Indian Harbour beach since your kids would get Ocean Breeze elementary (#2 in the state) and then they would go to Satellite Beach high school (#9 high school in the state). We have been here 2 months now and love it.
