As I've written in other posts, I have been reading posts on this forum for some time and am aware of the problems that exist, particularly in South Florida. I know that many Floridians are unhappy there and understandably have their opinions. What I hope is that I can get an answer to this question without starting a whole continuem of how awful it is to live there.

My question is this. We vacation in South Beach regularly. Vacationing is one thing and relocating to live someplace - quite another. We know that South Beach is not particularly "livable" for the average person especially with a family. What I'd like to know is - are there other cities in Florida that compare to South Beach in that it is a very walkable city with residential, shopping, dining, entertainment (outdoor malls and such), nightlife (not a clubhopper, but we like to go out and listen to some live music while sipping a cocktail) and parks all within walking distance. I don't mind having to make a short commute to and from work (1/2 hour or less), but I'd like to have a lot of activity within walking distance from where I live.

Ok, I'm ready...let's see what I get for this one....

I won't tell you all the terrible things. I happen to like it here myself.
Nice, active, walkable areas in Miami would be Coconut Grove, Coral Gables, South Miami. Outside of Miami could be Fort Lauderdale (near Las Olas). These are not cheap places however.

Thanks, VPcats, I appreciate that. Anyone else with other areas - in South Florida or in other parts of the state?

Planning to fly down to Florida and rent a car to check out different areas. Based on my original post, is there anyone who is willing to offer their suggestions of areas to visit while we're in Fl?

Seaside Florida in the panhandle and Celebration in Central Florida are master planned communities that are designed for pedestrians. Prob. not as lively as SoBe...but good small little towns. Downtown Naples is nice...actually Delray Beach downtown too...most of the older east coast cities have been revitalizing their downtowns...so pick an area an check it out. Life is great here if you have enough $$$$$.

Good suggestions Chelito. I may check these out myself! Thanks.
