Property taxes for Okaloosa County are about 1-1.25% of purchase price of the home. Median teacher salaries here are in the $45K-$50K range.

Okaloosa actually has some of the lower tax rates in the state since the vacation condo towers effectively subsidize those of us who are here year round.

We are thinking of buying a condo in Destin as a vacation rental/possible retirement home for us. Does anyone know of a decent buyers realtor who would have access to short sale/foreclosure listings?

What are the crime rates in Destin? Also how many law-enforcement opportunities are available down there?

Destin is still very much part of the south, its not like the rest of Florida. The majority of the tourists/snowbirds are from surrounding states al, ga, ms, la and tn. If your not southern it might be somewhat of a culture shock. Lots of Suvs/pickups and confederate flags, its more like alabama than the rest of florida. If you like seafood, destin is paradise, my personal favorites are pompano joes and backporch.

I find we have a higher proportion of Midwesterners whereas south FL has more Northeasterners.

Highly variable- in early February, we can get nights at or slightly below freezing and daytime highs struggling to make it to 50F, and by the end of March, we can get daytime highs around 80F.

Unlike the peninsula, the northern Gulf Coast in winter is hugely impacted by whatever weather system sweeps down from the Great Plains and parts further north.
