We have family coming to visit and want to show them around the area we have moved to. What activities would be fun and comfortable to take them to in the Citrus County, and surrounding, areas? They are older, and I don't want them to feel uncomfortable if possible. Places like Crystal River/Crackers are lovely for lunch, but, not much diversity. Would appreciate kind suggestions, thanks in advance.

The boat tour at Homosassa....and even Weeki Wachee is fun...and all the small old towns.....41 and 44 can be a gorgeous drive

you know, the area is probably a lot more diverse than you think....gay people don't wear a badge...and the vast majority are not into acting out

Why does it matter that your visitors are "gay"? Why wouldn't they enjoy the same kinds of things that "non-gay" people would enjoy?

I've always been told that "gay" people are just like everybody else...

Here are some links to check out:

The Citrus Equality Caucus members are a wonderful group of people and would be happy to offer suggestions. https://www.citrusequalitycaucus.com/

Events sometimes posted here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/categ...0088745438694/

Tubing on the Rainbow River is fabulous. Or swim at the State Park: https://www.floridastateparks.org/pa...ngs-state-park

Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park: https://www.floridastateparks.org/pa...ife-state-park

A day in "downtown" Inverness could be fun. In addition to restaurants and shops there's the Courthouse Museum https://cccourthouse.org/ and the Valerie Theater https://inverness.gov/603/Valerie-Th...ultural-Center Also a nice park on the lake (Liberty Park.)

Paint the Town Citrus is definitely LGBTQIA friendly https://www.paintthetowncitrus.com/

Restaurants:
World Fusion https://www.worldfusionsushi.com/
Katch 22 https://www.katchtwentytwo.com/

Depending on the timing of your guests' visit there may be a festival going on (many different festivals throughout the year in Citrus.) And book sales. The Friends of the Citrus County Library put on incredible book sales, especially the ones at the Citrus County Auditorium https://foccls.org/book-sales/

And of course there is much more only about an hour away in either Tampa or Orlando (or Gainesville.)

One more thing I loved to do when I lived in Citrus County - spend a day down in Tarpon Springs for shopping and dining (amazing Greek food!) and while there go to the beach at Fred Howard Park http://www.pinellascounty.org/park/06_howard.htm

I think it was a legitimate concerned question asked by the OP. In most parts of Florida outside of metropolitan areas, it's a cultural backwater full of political divisiveness, extremist views, and intolerance.

If you really think that, you should get out more.

Additionally, you ought to re-evaluate who is in actuality "extremist" and "intolerant".

My thoughts exactly. Who cares about their sexual orientation?

I get out quite a bit actually, including to the panhandle quite regularly - I assume you’re familiar with that area? The wife’s mom side lives in Tallahassee and I’m there at least 4 times a year. I went to undergrad in Tallahassee and traveled fairly regularly through New Orleans, Biloxi, Pensacola, Destin, DeFuniak Springs, Panacea, Port St. Joe, Saint George Island etc...I even spend time in Howey-in-the-Hills! I live in the South Florida area, but I definitely "get out."

As a local who has been through just about this entire state, I stand by my statement. It wasn’t meant to offend, just stating what I clearly see.

Thing is... Why would it matter that they are gay? Whose business is it? How would anyone even know this, unless one just up and informed everyone about it?

When I go out, how would anyone be certain as to whether or not I am straight, gay, or whatever? I don't walk around wearing a "ladies' man" badge, nor do gay people go around wearing a "homosexual" badge.

Unless the visitors are looking for gay-themed events and/or bars. If that's the case, then they'd do better with a day trip to Orlando or Tampa.

Have ANY of us seen them? I sure haven't...Obviously something stands out about them if the OP asked this question. Also if they do indeed stand out, the fact that they need to "conceal" themselves pretty much proves my point.

No need to conceal your truth in metropolitan areas where no one cares or even has the time to care about someone's else sexual preferences. I'm certainly not gay, but I also don't give a damn about who is...time is finite and i'm not wasting mine my caring about that. Small town folks typically have too much time on their hands to care.
