I read those recent posts and have a summary:

1. Some people prefer the heat, others like four seasons. I am not going to argue.
2. If you want the heat, FL isnt the only option as another poster said. What about Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Hawaii, California, Georgia, Alabama and a few other southern states? Its also pretty mild in coastal Carolinas
3. Firemed's pictures of the destructive nature of hurricanes should make one consider carefully if they want to move to a hurricane zone. The cold wont make you homeless but a hurricane can!
4. Many areas of FL and Georgia have a serious crime problem accroding to city-data crime index. I wont be living in a high crime city.
5. Snow and ice can make commuting tricky, someone mentioned shoveling snow for an hour to clear your driveway. Cant you get big wheels and drive over the snow or live in an area that doesnt get much snow?
6. Both heat and cold can kill. Its much easier to stay warm in cold than cool in heat.
7. If so many people hated cold, why do they live in expensive cities up north? Theres jobs south too!

The two of them seem to like the snow and each other.

LOVE that picture!!

Ok - to those who keep mentioning AZ,NM,TX, etc...
WINTER!!! WINTER!!! WINTER!!!
Sorry, but I just can't help it!
I LIVED in Tucson for 3 years!!!! Do you consider teens WARM???!!!
Well those are the temps - AT NIGHT - in the winter!!! (ok - more often 20's/30's )
Some of us are not up at the crack of dawn - that's when we sleep!
So the LOWS matter!!!
Even if you're not outside & you're sleeping - you need HEAT in TEENS!!! (& 20's/30's!)
And the highs are 60's! In SOFL, the LOWS are not even 60's - mostly low 70's!!! with highs mosly 80's!!!
(read this sentence again 500x or until it sinks in )
(And HI is too far & NEVER HOT!!! Some LIKE it hot!!!!)

Ok - read it again with me slowly...
NO OTHER PLACE BESIDES EXTREME SOUTH FLORIDA GETS AS WARM A WINTER!!! repeat 500x until it sinks in...

THAT'S why we are willing to pay more & deal with the threat of hurricanes.

If YOU don't like our weather, SHAAAADAAAAP!!!!!!!!
But seriously, PLEASE AT LEAST stop making false statements about the weather! It's just annoying to read!!!
THE DESERT AND MOUNTAINS GET COLD AT NIGHT IN THE WINTER, & THE DAYTIME MIGHT BE WARM TO SOME, BUT NOT TO THOSE WHO ACTUALLY LIKE IT HOT!!!!!!
Also, um, have you ever taken a look at the map? Go ahead - run your finger across & see that the ONLY place as south as Miami/The Keys is BROWNSVILLE TX! AND THEY ARE STILL A BIT NORTHER (?!) & ARE NOT AS WARM!!! WE'S IT BABY WE'S IT!!!!!!!
ARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!

Wow ive never seen anyone that likes it as hot as you! I made a poll and almost everyone voted to live in a cooler temperate climate, out of the 19, only 2 people choose tropical! Do you like being drenched in sweat? Well I am now and had to turn the a/c up again at a lower temperature! Like I said before, if anyone needs to turn the a/c then its too hot! By logic, if someone likes the heat then why use a/c to remove heat? I dont care if its indoors or outdoors, anything over 75 is enough to make me sweat! Lets see how many people still like south Florida weather if a/c wasnt invented!

NAH, I was one of the people who voted "tropical". I love HOT weather and I'm not really sure why we've lived up here our entire lives. (Guess cause we wanted to live near our parents) Maybe we'll appreciate the really warm days down there when we finally get there.

elfyum--You are very passionate about Miami's weather! At the risk of incurring your wrath, I must express another opinion. It's not just the latitude that effects temperatures, there are other factors. Forget about Tucson, let's look at San Diego--much farther north than Miami. In Dec./ January, their average LOW temp is high 40s, with high 60s in the daytime. In August, their average HIGH is high 70s! And they do it all with low humidity! The most perfect climate I can imagine in the US. (But I don't live there because I'm not a "weather-trumps-all" kind of guy!)

I spent my teenage years in Miami and couldn't wait to get out when I left for college, due mostly to the ungodly weather 9 months of the year. If sheer heat and high humidity is your thing, Miami's your place, but don't just visit in January and think that it's going to be that way the rest of the year. You WILL need a.c.. We lived a year without it. I didn't get much sleep that year! And forget about outdoor activities except fot the beach.

PS: need_affordable brings up an interesting point about air conditioning. I read several years ago that social geographers agree that the year-round population of FL started increasing by leaps and bounds at the same time residental air conditioning became viable and affordable!
