Default Destin???

What can you tell me about Destin?

My hubby and I have lived in MI and Chicago and he'd like to consider a relocation to Destin. Curious if anyone has made a move there from the north and how the experience has been?

The thought of warmer weather is appealing, but I also love a little change in seasons and my hubby said Destin isn't as hot/humid all year like other parts of Florida? We're in our early 30's and the beach sounds great, but we would also like to be near a somewhat decent size city, some culture and great schools. How's the job market there? Is it more of a tourist/beach town?

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Its a little pricey as well.

It's unquestionably a tourist town, but one of my favorite ones anywhere.

The job market is somewhat limited because of that. In general, the Florida Panhandle has tourism and military jobs and retirees. After that, there's not a whole lot, but the beaches are spectacular.

The following link will give you more info:Destin Florida Travel, Vacation, & Shopping Info - Destin, FL - EmeraldCoast.com

I live about an hour drive from Destin and the area is great, the most modern and inspirational town in the area. Lots of tourist, yes has humidity, jobs are available in careers with proper education; include your references.

Lots of natural escapes if you want to get away from the beach..

It does get hot & humid here in the summer .... but it gets cold in the winter too! The nearest "cities" would be Pensacola, Panama City, Tallahassee .... but really the closest big city would be Atlanta. However, it all depends on what you seek in a "city". Destin and the surrounding areas have grown and are growing every day. You can pretty much find anything you need or that you could find anywhere else .. it's not a remote area anymore ... but it's still not a big city ... we do have culture and you might be surprised how many talented people live along our Emerald coast. It is largely a beach / resort town and the jobs and economy really depend on that industry to be successful. This might be the most challenging part of living here ... finding work ... and work that is not seasonal. It's definitely something you have to consider unless you are in a position that work is not important. Below please find some links to different local employment websites and the links to the surrounding school districts.

Destin is a pretty place. It is still hot and humid - it's Florida, but no, not as bad as say Miami or Orlando. It is a cross between small town and tourist town. Slightly a party town and it gets some overflow from Panama City during the spring break season. Even with that it is a pretty quiet place. There's a nice outlet mall. There is not a whole lot of "culture". The closest "decent size city" is Pensacola at about 45 miles away, but it is at least a relatively straight shot to get to it. I can't tell you anything about the job market or the schools. I have never heard anything horrible about the schools and I lived and taught about an hour away, but that's the only thing I can say about that. If you do decide on it and you like nightclubs, check out The Swamp which is in Fort Walton Beach, right beside Destin.
