By the time my kids were teens it was so bad I couldn't imagine keeping them there, for safety and moral reasons. I'd love to go back to visit Key West and I do go see my Gram just over the state line when I can, but other than that, I don't care to ever go back even to visit. But a friend I grew up on the island with has been tossing back and forth going back. I think once she got there though she'd realize it's not the place it was when we were little. As I've gotten older I've come to realize you just can't go back in time. And that's what it would take for it to be like it was.

Things do change in ones life as well as places ; since you are an American able to seek ' life , liberty, and pursuit of happiness' on such issues, you have the perogative to live wherever you want. You can move out of state, or, consider living in a different part of Florida ; perhaps theres a better locale for you and your families needs than the one youve been living in. People move all the time for such desires. If youre unhappy, dont remain in that state of mind --- instead , take affirmative action to change it.

from Michigan to move back when he grows up, if he doesn't like it here. My husband's boss and siblings came to Florida as kids. All 3 of them moved back to NY when they were old enough. His boss was the only sibling who stayed because of his widowed, elderly Dad. He says when his son is finished college and his Dad is gone, he will leave and join his brothers and sisters.
You can go anywhere you want. It's a free country.

I rode the subway for 15 years. I'll pass on that thanks.

Of course I was being sarcastic!. The other posters are right, different strokes for different folks is the whole thing.
For me, no shoveling snow, no cold weather, no hats, gloves, scarves, etc. But for some this is a necessity, an enjoyment. That's cool. But those who don't like it here should just say that they don't like it here and not complain about it so much. Florida has been good to me and my wife and we are quite happy with all its differences. That's what makes it Florida. It's not for everybody.
I havent posted on this particular Florida thread before, and I certainly am a registered user and do not use multiple names/accounts.
But I couldn't hire someone without meeting them, making sure their chemistry was right for the situation, not just based on experience alone.
But, maybe that's just me.
Will you come visit on vacation?

Heck ya, I will visit when I can. I would like to come for a week, but not to SWFL. I will go to the Melbourne beach/Indiatlantic area probably, stay somewhere on the beach at a nice hotel, spend a day at Seaworld with our daughter.
I prefer to live up there, visit here. I have been here for almost 15 years, I just need a change, there is a lot I miss about up there. Plus I have a lot of family up there I miss too. I had my last 2 grandparents pass away up there and I was stuck here and didn't get to see them before they did pass. I want to visit them at thier place of rest.
I used to like it down here, but I have grown to not like it, now I'm just going back where I was. "To each his own" my Memere used to say. Florida does have some positives for me too...

Florida is for people who dislike cold/snow/sleet,etc and who like the warmth. Yes it is hot in the summer but that's the trade-off for not having the cold. I'm doing the snowbird thing now but have lived in Fla. year round and it wasn't that bad. I just like living in 2 different areas but if I had to choose one I'd be in Florida year round.

People always talk about how great the weather is, if you like 100 degrees and 90-100% humidity then it's the place for you.
If you like violent thunderstorms every day during the spring, summer, and fall, it's the place for you.
If you like paying $1200 a month for rent and want to make $8 an hour if you can find work, it's the place for you.
If you like paying thousands in homeowners insurance, auto insurance, and property taxes, it's the place for you. I agree with everything you said except "the old people comment." at some point in time, unfortunately for you, you will be in the same position----old! Better start Now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:d:d
if you like high crime, rude, and old people, it's the place for you.
That's just the start...

Ive done the snowbird thing but will be moving to Floridas Panhandle so i can leave the cold/snow/sleet/ice/snowblowing/slipping on icy surfaces/suffering from depression due to 5 months of gloomy weather. Id rather have the opposite and be able to go to the beach often. Not to mention a far cheaper place to live than where im at now.

Me, too . . . or at least a "loopy bird" lifestyle. A dream is to get to a point where I can have three or four residences--smaller (even very small) places would be fine for me to do this. I'd probably have one in Florida, one in the New York City area, one out West (probably somewhere near Vegas, as it's central (though quite a trip in some cases) to a lot of stuff I want to be near), and one either in British Columbia or Southeastern Alaska, and spend three or four months at a time each place, making the road trips between them at a very leisurely pace so I can do a lot of sightseeing along the way. At the moment, though, it's just not feasible because of our (well, more my wife's) employment needs. Maybe 10-15 years down the road . . . if I play my cards right and get a bit lucky (so that I can have a decent income while not needing to be in a particular location).
