I haven't heard of men attacking a woman in the area I work in in a LONG time. If they have, it's usually gang/drug related. Anyway, I walk in a really populated area where the sidewalks are as crowded as can be. I don't think anyone would be THAT desperate to pull out a knife in such a crowded place. Anyway, there's 100 other teachers in my school leaving the same time I am. Nothing's ever happened to any of us.

Im not referring to a woman walking a sidewalk with hundreds of people around . Im referring to a woman who allows herself to be vulnerable . 1 in 4 women will be sexual assaulted sometime in thier life ... and this statistic doesnt include women who get robbed or women who just get banged around because of men who have a personal vendetta against females in general. Ive tried with your Rachael -- just trying to help you see the real world and how very unwise it is placing yourself in vulnerable situations because nothing has happened to you so far. End.

I've been around the real world quite a bit. I take these as personal attacks. I'd say teaching in the worst area of NYC is the real world. I'm not placing myself in a vulnerable situation--that would be walking back to a far subway stop on a deserted street in the area, listening to my headphones. That's being vulnerable. Walking back to the subway in a crowded area when it's light out isn't nearly as vulnerable. What am I supposed to do, quit my job because I'm "vulnerable" by working in this area?

They think EVERYBODY should carry guns. It's the USA and your "right" as a citizen, wherever you live or work.

I think every Woman needs some protection on her . It doesnt have to be a gun. But a Woman who thinks a physical/sexual assault 'wont or cant happen to me' , is very misled and unwise given the moral degradation of America and how the Media denigrates women . Ive known many women and girls whove been thru a physical and/or sexual assault and it has a deep lasting scar. Its your safety and how you wish to view it.

Lets get back to the OP.

Thank you..

Hi there,

I have been reading a lot of threads here and I am getting the impression that Florida is absolutely full of punks, gangs, criminals, and others out to get everybody they can.

I am wondering...since it gets hot down there...is it legal like in Texas to carry a sidearm? Or at the very least a Taser (which looks like a sidearm until it is taken out of it's holster)?

I can look up info on this but thought I would ask for input from persons on the ground there as to whether such a thing is done or not these days.

I would consider carrying concealed but might die from sweating to death before dying from a punks knife blade stuck in my gut.

I don't relish the thought of using such things but hey...if Florida is full of criminal types and punks these days...it might come in handy.

It is, as reaffirmed by the Supreme Court in the Heller decision.

My wife lived in Manhattan for eight years and never had a problem, fwiw...

Regardless, in FL, if you are of good character, it is easy to get a permit to carry a concealed weapon. see Concealed Weapons or Firearm Program - Division of Licensing, FDACS

Carrying concealed makes more sense. I haven't found it (work firewall blocks most of the good sites) but there were figures released that showed the crime rate for Florida CCW holders, non CCW holders, and the police in Fla. CCW holders had a lower rate of being convicted of a crime than the police! They also hit a greater percentage of the time when they DID have to shoot someone.

I have an out of state one...best insurance I have when I visit the dirty streets of Vero Beach and Disney....
As far as carrying in hot weather, there are several options. I like a fanny pack. Since I'm there as a tourist it fits the look....
Something small and relaible-like a S&W airweight- in a pocket is just fine. Something larger for the car or under a jacket.

Crime in Canada or Europe for that matter- look at the crime rates for nationalities here in the US. Japanese Americans have a lower crime rate than Japanese in Japan. English, Swedish, etc....are the same.

Places like England and Australia have huge rates of houses being burglarized while someone is at home. They know they have little to fear from the homeowners.

I never thought of carrying something in a fanny pack. EXCELLENT suggestion. That way I can still dress in a t-shirt and shorts and still carry. That's excellent.

Now if only I won't be mistaken for a member of the gay community...I've heard fanny packs are a sign of such...just hearsay mind you...I'm not sure how accurate that is.

Carlos
