I am considering moving to Homosassa from Tampa. What is the difference between Homosassa and Homosassa Springs, other than the latter is on the east side of Hwy 19? Can any one tell me more about the area. I have looked it up on line but not too much info is there. What is the closest beach or best beach nearby? Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks! |

We visited there last spring. Homosassa is small - the population is about 2000. Homosassa Springs (5 miles from Homosassa) is larger - the population is about 12,000. They are located on the west coast of Florida about 60 miles north of Tampa. They seemed isolated to me and VERY small. But then I'm used to Orlando.
The closest beach I know about is Fort Island Beach in Citrus County (15 miles away) Fort Island is Citrus County's saltwater gulf beach. This is a thousand foot beach with picnic facilities and concessions. Lifeguards are on duty from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Boat ramp and dock accessibility. Open daylight to 9:30 PM. Turn west on Ft. Island Trail and follow to the end, approximately 9 miles. This is a free facility. Hernando Beach (27 miles away) Swimming, water skiing, fishing, picnicking or just playing in the sunshine, this cozy 3-acre park and beach is ideal for the family outing. Easy to reach just off U.S.41 with paved parking close by so you won't have far to tote your gear. Lifeguards are on duty from Memorial Day through Labor Day. |

Sarasota, etc. The ones mentioned are ok......but hardly compare to real beaches. I own a home here and I like the area.........very quiet. Not much shopping or restaurants.........which suits me fine. Biggest problem is the local politicos are very greedy and the taxes are getting to be exorbitant. Of course that is true throughout Florida , I suppose. Mostly older retired people........like me. Fishing is the biggest thing...........really not much else to do. |

I'm going to relocate bach to Florida before the season this year. I'm semi retired and looking for a small apartement bldg to manage as that's what I love doing. I have small hot dog kind of cart even tho I could cook anything on it. Does it look like there is anything for me in Homosassa? T Baker bytescafe432@hotmail.com

We live in Inverness and my husband works in Homosassa. There isn't much there. it is a small town with the basic stores, banks and restaurants you find everywhere else. Crystal River is just up the road with a small mall and the same shopping centers. The main road is Hwy 19 which is a nightmare with traffic. The Fort Island Gulf Beach is the only beach around but not one i even go to. All summer long it's constantly closed because of septic run off from the homes built up along the roads. it's quite nasty and mushy bottom too and not a single wave. the beach part is ok. there are quite a few boat ramps around to get on the gulf and river but during the summer, it's crazy out there. We've had some jet skis out there and always get bumped by the boats at the docks. it's a mess. it's very cramped quarters for the boaters to get in and out. The closest beach from there is Pine Island in Weeki Wachee about 20 minutes south on 19 from Homosassa. |

Homosassa is generally a nice quiet town...or so it used to be. I live in homosassa and have lived here for 3 years. My husband grew up here and moved away after school. Since getting married and having children he decided to move back to this lovely little town that he remembered. Unless you live in sugarmill it's terribly polluted w/ drugs (beyond nomal, and note I come from orlando originally) sugarmill is bad too but it's just not talked about as much, for example 1 1/2 months ago there was a drug bust in sugarmill where they found a man growing pot in several rooms of his house. It is strickly for retired people and not for the young! Homosassa elementary is awesome and I couldn't ask for a better school. BUT There is not one middle or h.s. worth anything here. Crystal river is awful, my friend teaches there and wont even let her children attend the school she works at. Lecanto is not much better. And those are the only 2 options. Not to mention there is NO work in citrus county anymore. So unless you are retired, homosassa is not a place to raise children anymore. In fact we live on a quiet road not alot of traffic, our dog was stolen 5 months ago and 1 week ago my boys bikes were stolen off of our driveway. My husband, my three children and I are moving in november, because our children deserve better. Nice place to vacation or retire but that is all it's worth!
