We ,moved down here from Ct. and previously from NY. ...Well, we are feeling like we're on a permenent vacation also. It does feel good though because we had a lot of stress up north. But it also could get to you I think. It's like this "ALL" the time. Also, if you're not real close to the water, to me, it looks like NJ, or LI....like another poster wrote. ....I don't like that. .....

In a lot of places they are just building soooo much that they are plowing down everything, and all the beautiful floiage, and it is all just sub-divisions. I have a pool and that makes it nice, but if I look out off my patio, it could be anywhere USA! That bugs me. That's the most thing I complain about..... Also they are very rigid down here...meaning the laws. And they enforce them. I'm talking traffic, working license's and all that. ....I don't know...it is beautiful, but like I said, mostly just close to the water. I live about 4 miles in, and that's not far, but it isn't like near the shore. ........I like the outside pubs with the music, and all that, but I guess it could get to ya after a while.

I agree with you even though I've been living here for 27 years.

For VWbuggy3's comment, about taxes thats correct, BUT its not as bad as claimed. For example - my mother moved from Florida back to Rock Hill South Carolina almost a year and a half ago after living here in Florida for 27 years.

She is taxed on her vehicles and would be taxed on a home if she owned one, however her taxes for her and her husbands cars were $204.00 for 2004 and $245.00 for 2005. (She only lived in So Carolina for 4 months the year of 2004) Which was less than I paid here in Florida to renew my automobile tags on my two vehicles. My grandmothers property taxes on her home are only $287.46 per year. If you like, you go to this website and see for yourself :
http://webserver.yorkcountygov.com/onlinetaxes/ (broken link)

So I dont think the taxes are as bad as some people may think and my family and I are moving there as soon as my home sells here in Florida. I hear alot of people are moving from North Carolina to South Carolina because the property taxes are cheaper.

I hope this has been helpful and I wish you and your family luck.

Default nY - Fl

I moved down from Warwick, NY (Orange Cty) site unseen to Palm Harbor, FL,(Clearwater area, West coast)
I am here 2-1/2 years, I know what you feel, but I coulndt and cant move back to NY for $ reasons, I'm looking at Mt Dora, FL, NC has a very high state payroll tax, but I hear alot of good things, it seems alot of people go downhill when they move here but after being here 2-3 years, it shapes up somehow, theres a lot of people like you in this boat,

Default Interesting...

You are so right! That's not unusual at all. I really think its because people like you and I are so use to the change of seasons. I miss the fall season the most, but I don't miss the winter season! I just advised someone else from NY to move close to a major city because a smaller town may be boring. I don't know anything about Wellington though, so I will assume doesn't have the big city skyline that we are also use to coming from NY.

By the way I also lived in North Carolina (Raleigh - Durham). Okay great, it had the change of seasons! Smaller scale city life which was okay. But I still felt something was missing! I guess people like you and I will always feel that way...even though NY can be the most stressful place to live, we became so conditioned to that lifestyle that anywhere else seems, well, for lack of a better word, boring.

But I tell you, visit North Carolina first as much as you can before you make a decision. All of America has good places to live, thank goodness, but don't rush to leave the eternal vacation state of Florida you might regret that you didn't give it more time to just adapt to the different lifestyle.

Default @blueridgemountainsnc.calm

FOUR hurricanes of 2004 ran me out of my home state in Lakeland, FL. I just couldn't take any more weather trauma - and believe me it's real (read below). We now live just outside of Asheville, NC and LOVE IT!!! I had never seen the mountains or snow---there is state income tax, state motor vehicle tax (yes, you pay taxes every year on vehicle you either own outright, or have financed) and there is tax on food. The overall cost of living is just as low as FL in my opinion....but the beauty, serenity and people FAR outweigh those taxes. I HAD TO MOVE NORTH TO TRULY BE IN THE SOUTH!

Lakeland is NOT in the middle of nowhere...it's in the center of everything!
I was raised in Lakeland, FL for nearly 30 years. After the military, I moved back home to Lakeland and LOVED IT! There is lots to do: museum, community theater, the City spends LOTS of money on parks and recreatation and programs for kids AND adults; the humidity is THICK, but it is everywhere in FL. I've spent a lot of time in Orlando and Tampa too...Orlando=tourists, and a much higher cost of living. Tampa--that's cool tool, lots of stuff to do as it is much bigger than Lakeland, and again, a higher cost of living. If you're looking for a sort of "small hometown feel" (pop. over 80.000) Lakeland might be the place for you. As a benchmark, 2.5 years ago I built a new home in a very nice neighborhood for $144,000---its was over 2,000 sf, a typical, Florida stucco home. There are houses new and old for much less, but this was in a great neighborhood called Deer Brooke in the south side of town (if you care to check it out w/ a realtor). I can send some pictures to you if you want. I still have family that lives in Lakeland.
But be advised of one thing for sure: all weather experts have predicted that the State of FL will experience at least 11 major weather events (including hurricanes) for the next 22 years (you can research my facts on weather.com). Knowing this, the whole state evacuates away from the coast, inland to the Lakeland/Orlando area. The four big hurricanes in the end of 2004 ran my new husband and I out of the state.... I just couldn't take the mandatory evacuations, loss of income, evacuating expenses, damage, etc. Even after living there my whole life. That is a HUGE thing to consider. No-one ever thinks it will happen to them, but it does. I know people have to live somewhere, but if you have any types of fears about severe tropical storms, hurricanes and tornadoes, FL might not be the place for you.......hate to burst your bubble, but it's a VERY real issue. Finally, other than the weather, Lakeland is a BEAUTIFUL place to live! It's NOT in the middle of nowhere---it's 30 mi. to Tampa and about 45 to Orlando....about 1 and a quarter hour to any beach, etc., etc., etc. Hope to hear back from you!

Default Fl to Nc

Hi, I lived in Land O Lakes Fl for 5 years from NC and I moved back to NC 2 years ago. I love the coastal area of NC, it gets hot (nothing like Tampa) and you get 4 seasons. Even on the coast we sometimes get snow, just flurries, but fun for the kids to see. Check out some of the coastal carolina websites, atlantic beach, Wilmington, etc., you will love it.

Good luck
