Default Does anyone have a Pre-fab underground Hurricane Shelter ? Any thoughts ??

Id like to seriously consider buying a low cost prefab hurricane shelter that goes in the ground. Does anyone have one or can steer me in the right direction ? Im not looking for anything elaborate...just something to get in for a few hours to ride out a strong Hurricane . If someone has made thier own, id like to hear about it also. Any thoughts would appreciated .

Why in the world would you want to be underground? While wind receives the most press, high water - flooding is what kills.
I want to be on high ground in a well built re-enforced concrete structure.

You must be thinking of tornadoes, hurricanes bring with them alot of water, not a good idea being under ground.

Im going to be inland quite aways and just want protection from Hurricane winds and possible Tornadoes . What about a water proof shelter above ground that is well anchored ?

I have heard of people building safe rooms inside their homes. Usually its a room/walk in closet that has CBS (Concrete Block Stone) on four walls and a strong door to the room. Not sure what they put on the ceiling of the room??? This is probably what you are looking for.

I haven't heard about underground safe rooms.
We don't have basements for the fact that we sit on coral rock, hard to dig.

We always build hurricane shelters above ground. With a sealing hatch. poured concrete cells and built to withstand 150 mph wind loads. I am a Contractor and have built Two or three of these. Not good idea to build underground, due to storm surge and water tables.

Underground shelters in Florida can become fish tanks in not time during a hurricane. If you reside in Crestview Florida might work... Will be better to build inside the house and follow the guidance from a fellow member....

Can you give me a rough idea what a very simple low cost shelter would cost in Crestview, Fl ? Thanks.

If you're inland on high ground then you should make sure your house is wind ready.
Make sure you have good shutters on your windows, and that your roof is in excellent condition. When you replace your roof use a peel-n-stick membrane instead of 30# felt. I went into my attic and glued my plywood to my trusses by caulking with polyurethane construction adhesive.
