Default Florida Building Code/Tornado Protection

Hi All,

I have been researching homes in FL and after this tornado I started looking at options. There are sever compaines out there that build tornado proof rooms or out house type rooms for those type of situations. I think florida should mandate a building code to build these houses with a least one room that can withstand tornado's... Is there already such a law? If so, I was unware and that would be great to have.

I have a neighbor who still has a bomb shelter in the backyard dating back to the 50's. Most have been dug up and people put in pool or something but there were quite a few back then. Getting to what you said, you don't need laws for you to keep yourself safe.

Do what you think is right and forget about making laws, we have enough laws. The only thing you would have to do would be sure you can get permits for such a structure. They are going to have to create special variances for people who want them and not give people big hassels about it.

With the bee hives the USA keeps kicken, I hope they won't regret the pool.

A number of companies do provide the tornado room, below is a model from Tornado Safe Rooms.

The "Five-Person" TornadoSafeRoom™™ is one of our three highest tested and certified Tornado Safe Rooms in the United States, tested and certified by Certified Testing Laboratories of Orlando, Florida, a Miami-Dade County approved testing laboratory, and has been tested to meet the ALL-FLORIDA Storm Shelter Testing Requirements. It has been tested to withstand wind loads of 450 mph and to withstand the 100 mph projectile test. This unit also passed gun shot tests using 38 special, 380, 9 mm and 45 automatic military weapons from a distance of 15' without any penetration.

Bury one of these in your back yard. their waterproof so the high water table shouldn't effect it.

Thumbs up Custom steel shelter

We have looked at many of these shelter type saferooms and they are all too restrictive. The idea of locking myself and family in a box is quite nauseating. It's bad enough dealing with the storm itself and now i need to climb in these things.

We used a west palm beach vault company Derringer saferooms to convert my 6x8 closet to a steel reinforced saferoom with a wind rating of more than 250 and they may also make a hidden door as the entrance, this way we can put valuables and sorts in there for security and hide in there if theres a break-in.
We have regular shelving in there and the closet is still fully functional.
good luck

I am curious..can you give me a ballpark price for converting closet to a safe room? I live in tornado alley, some ppl have shelters but not many.
