There are pleanty of us 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation Central Floridians still around. We generally know who we are, but you wouldn't necessarily be able to pick us out in a crowd. We can talk "cracker" when we want to; but for business purposes, have also adopted more of a midwestern twang.

I'm from Oviedo and live in Oviedo (well actually chuluota) but I have lived here my whole life. So there is definitely some of us around. I remember what Oviedo used to look like and it has changed a lot. I am a Senior in high school but I remember when there wasn't subdivisions everywhere you looked.

Post Oviedo

Well, I'd say you're in for a cultural shock. Florida isn't NY and as a former Long Islander, I'd advise that you come down and spend some real time here looking around before you commit to a move. Don't get me wrong, FL has a lot going for it and I've been here 14 yrs. now, wouldn't have stayed if it was bad, but it takes some getting used to. On the plus side the home prices and taxes are a fraction of what you are paying in Nassau Co. Also, there is no state tax. As for schools, it's like NY in so much as different school districts have different ratings. There are some great ones and some dismal ones, you have to do your homework on that. I'm in Marion Co. so I can't tell you how the Oviedo school district rates. We moved to Marion Co. because of it's small town atmosphere and the scenery was so much like that of NY with the big oaks and rolling landscapes. However, we still get homesick for good old L.I. and go home a couple of times a year to visit and get our Autumn fix. There's no apple orchards or pumpkin patches here! With Oviedo being closer to Orlando, you will have a larger selection of theater venues and shopping is excellent in Orlando. But, to really get a feel for the area there is no substitute for actually spending time there and getting the feel of the land. Good Luck fellow L.I.'er
