I just moved here with my family, I have family here and they kept saying work and living would be so great.... well guess what so wrong........... I come from a small town and historic in S.C. but it was not like this..... there is nothing here for anyone. no work. no anything. I have 3 teenage kids and they are good kids and i am not wishing to have them get involved with all the drugs or crime here, we come from a laid back town and thought moving here would be better this is worse then i ever thought. maybe if the people in this are would promote work and better the schools it wouldn't be so bad. but as for me we are moving out of this dead town.

I wanted to know how the tree festival is. Is it safe? Are there too many drunks at it? My husband and I live in Dothan and thought about driving down. Please let me know the real truth about the festival before we spend our money on the high cost of gas. Thanks

Perry is very expensive to live in. Especially the fuel prices. One guy owns all the gas stations and he has a monoply on the fuel deliveries.

For the most part, I do like living here. I come from a big City in South Florida so its nice to have a slower pace. The one thing I do not like, is some people can be racist. I love the weather..its perfect especially in the winter. Another downer is since this is a small town , there isn't much to do here so a lot of people get into drugs. Its sad but true. And the schools are horrible!! we have our son in a Christian school because I refuse to enroll him in public.

Exclamation Beware before you move here!

I lived here for a short time. I worked at a local prison. During my time working here I witnessed atrocities of Guards, local residents of Perry, beat inmates and treat them so badly I could not sleep some nights. The prison in perry makes up a high percentage of the Jobs in this area. So you have to think? If these people have absolutely no respect for human rights, how do you think it will roll over into their personal life? Now you have to keep in mind that some of these inmates could be YOU! What I mean by that is some of the inmates are in jail simply because of floridas mandatory sentencing laws. Some of these inmates that get physically abused by the residents of Perry (the guards), are serving time for driving infractions, fishing violations, minor infractions that in most other parts of the country would require a fine, but in Florida, it's a mandatory sentence in a State Prison. I have witnessed, reported only to see no action taken to what I had seen occur, and told to keep my mouth shut. This eventually with other factors convinced me to quit the job and relocate to another State.
The mindset of the natural citizens of Perry is that if you are an "outsider", not born and raised there, then you don't belong. The buckeye mill is all Family, the School System is all family, the Prison had so many Moms, Dads, darter and Sons working there it was like a giant reunion, so you can imagine all the infighting that went on not to mention jealousy. The only reason I ended up employed in the position I had was because there wasn't any "Local Boys" that had the skills for the job, I still caught hell!
I would estimate that 90 percent of the jobs in the county go to locals. If you don't have a special skill that none of the locals can do, you can forget about employment. I have seen good folks driven out of perry simply because there neibors refused to befriend them. I have seen people come to work in this town and driven out because "Bubbas" brother wanted his job and the fine friends of Bubba helped him get fired.
The mentality of these people is unbelievable. It is a learned behavior, these people are filled with selfishness and hate, contempt and down out disrespect for there fellow man. It was the sickest town I have ever seen! Even the local Law Enforcement requires cronyism as a preresiquit for obtaining employment. Again, if your not from Perry, they won't help you! I had a need for help from the goog ole boys of Taylor county's police force and because no one there knew me, I was treated very badly. I don't want to get into the Judicial System, but if you don't know the Judge, and the Judge knows the person that wronged you and caused you request a day in court to solve a matter, you can forget it!! The Cronyism runs deep in Taylor County!
The fact is that the generations of family's that make up Taylor County does not want YOU in their community if you are an outsider! They will not welcome you, they will let you know where they stand and they will treat you and your family like dirt. If you move there you will not find friendship, only suspicious people talking about you to there other neighbors of which is ussaully their family members and within a year you will feel so unwelcome in this place that you will actually get depressed.

The only recreation is fishing and hunting. I guess you could go swimming at the 1000 foot beach at Keaton. I was an Elk Member in two previous city's I lived in before moving there to Perry, I wasn't allowed to join the local elks club in Taylor County though.

I am going to close this now, I could go on and on for hours of the bad expierences I had in Taylor county Fl, but I think you get the jest of it. All I can do is say let those people there stay locked in the 1800s mentality and move anywhere but to Taylor County Florida! I promise you will find happiness more in Hell than you can in Taylor County Florida.

In all fairness/
Now I am just one person with a opinion. My opinions are not any better than the next guys. But I would highly recommend you spend a week or two in the community before you decide to plant roots here. About the only social activity in the town is Church? Maybe you can meet and talk to people there before you decide?
