being much better off today
Tiffany_PartyOf6 - I’m sorry to hear this.
I keep hearing more and more about mortality and morbidity among people in our society today, friends and family who have had either an untimely death or been stricken with a serious illness.
Having one’s health is priceless and should not be taken for granted. Further is should be protected! Eat right, exercise, go to the doctor and have a “what if” plan B. I hope things work out for you and your family
That being said I agree with a lot of AliceT’s post. People should understand that it’s not always going to be smooth sailing so be prepared.
People I see who feel pain most are those who are least prepared, protected, or capable. These people tend to be the young, old and or sick, and those who 58robbo speak of who borrow or spend beyond their means to achieve their perceived social successes.
This is the 5th major recession I’ve lived through and it’s shaping up to be the worst one yet. I’ve seen this before so I knew what to expect and started to prepare some time back. I’m glad I did, I never thought it could have the potential to get this bad.
I feel bad for the young who have no idea what bad times are about, even though they may have a higher degree of education (collage degree) they seem to have less skills today than ever before - they are about to learn some hard lessons.
The old and sick who are less capable of weathering the storm, if they are not already well prepared then survival for them will be difficult.
And those who just don’t see that those good times come and even if they are here for a long time eventually they go – I don’t know they will ever be prepared
About being prepared – some food for thought. We have looked at every nickel we spend. Discretionary spending was severely curtailed and even items once deemed necessities have been cut (i.e. 2 cars going down to one).
One of the biggest items was eating out. I’ll use breakfast as an example… breakfast out at $4-$7 per person plus tax and tip. To begin portions sizes were usually too large – even 2 eggs 2 strips of bacon 2 slices of bread plus coffee or juice. At home I prepare 1 egg, 1 slice of bread, 1 strip of bacon, and coffee ***total cost 75cents
We eat mostly at home (even homemade lunches) – quality foods (beef chicken fish and pork) smaller healthier portions breakfast lunch & dinner included for between $6 and $10 a day per person . I wish we would have done things like this a long time ago we would be much better off today.

I have not heard the use of the word "epidemic and a correlation between crime in the US and other countries has no bearing on the thread (even if true which is debatable.)
But, higher street crime and aggression in the streets in FL as the economy goes sour is a given.
More than that, it's already happening.

It's going to be a very, very bad Holiday season.
I am getting the feeling that she is going to to out of work and moving in with us. Especially bad, since I am depressed to begin with having to live here.

Taking just a couple minutes to look at a few job sites, I see jobs listed for Naples--some posted every day. I can't say the likelihood of attaining those jobs, but I've never been of the opinion that the best way to find work is by looking at classified ads, job sites, etc. anyway. The best way is networking, contacting employers you'd like to work for, etc. Finding a job is a bit like having an unpaid, high-end sales job, where you're selling yourself.

They are not even hiring cashiers for seasonal help in Naples. However, with everything you need a hook, somebody on the inside. We know somebody who works for the county and helped me speed along my job app last year. He said if she wants to work for Sheriff's Dept. instead, he can make a few phone calls.
I don't know. At any rate, she is coming from Bloomies in NY which has to be a plus anywhere. She recently made a bust for thousands of dollars, which involved an FBI identity theft, so we will see. She was named employee of the year for the NE region for the number of busts and amount on money she saved the company.
Personally, I still think she should have stayed in NY.

all the stores were advertising for seasonal help for the holidays. There is nothing today in the paper for that here in Naples, or even in Ft. Myers. The major stores have announced they will not be hiring seasonal help this year because of the economy. Even the hotels are saying they are not seeing the bookings they had last year.
It is not going to be a good holiday season, especially here in the Naples/Ft. Myers area. Where my daughter is in NY, they ARE still hiring seasonal help. I think she is making a big mistake moving here.

Yeah, with the success it sounds like she's having in her job, I definitely agree with that.
