I live in Palm Beach Gardens, FL and I would like to know if anyone has ever worked as a mystery shopper. I tried the free ones but most pay only $5.00 and wonder how legitimate are the ones you pay $20 +. thank you

I doubt that those would be so widely available if they were legit.

Back in the 80's and 90's I did ''mystery shopping'' many times and it was great---free meals plus $$ was the usual but also free books plus money, etc. However I think those days are gone. I got the jobs through a state employment agency-Va.--and it cost me nothing. I tried a few years ago from an on-line site and got nothing...and I paid to try...that's what it's about--getting your money when you have a very slim chance.

They do still use them. My daughter works at a very upscale store in NY. In fact she "busted" a secret shopper very recently.

When I signed up to do it several years ago, I found it was very competitive just getting the jobs. You would get an email saying one was available and by the time you answered it, they said the shop was already taken.

I did some mystery shopping when I was a sahm. The highest pay I rec'd was $60 to run around a mall talking to various workers, making sure trash cans weren't overflowing and spotting the ladies restroom to make sure it was clean.

My faves were the restaurant reviews and my least fave was running around a certain department store counting operating registers, giving percentages of certain apparel and linen brands on sale and remembering associates names.

I also visited a few banks and rec'd $15 a shop on those.

One type of shop I always wanted to do, but couldn't, was the apartment shop. You couldn't take children on those shops.

$20 to shop? Do you mean you make a purchase and then they reimburse you or you return the item? I did a credit card purchase and return shop at a high end collectible store. I don't remember what I was paid.

Most mystery shops out there are legit. I don't think I ever did a shop that seemed like it wasn't on the up and up otherwise I wouldn't have done it.

I have a friend who's been doing it part-time for quite awhile. She doesn't depend on it for income, since all she gets is free hotel rooms & meals. But she's allowed to take another person, so it's a mini-vacation.
