Talking Just my $.02

I just finished reading this entire thread. I laughed through alot of it, thanks!
I just moved here in July. I secured a great job just prior to moving here and am renting a house, for now. My daughter is a sophomore in HS and is doing much better here than she did from where we just moved from. NEPA. Originally from NJ (Shore) She has made nice friends, for whom I have met...and that is the key, btw. If you are involved in your childrens lives, they will learn manners and if you watch the company they keep you will not let them get them into trouble. That doesn't happen alot anymore....anywhere. The things she tells me would curl your hair! But she is just as shocked as I am and that is a good thing that she is aware of her surroundings and knows the difference between good and bad and makes good decisions. I am proud of her.
Yes, I may be new to FL, but I have been trying to get here for almost 30 years. I am finally here and I am HAPPY with my decision.
I agree with the teachers, Police and Fire folks all being under paid....everywhere in this country. Relative to pro sports being paid millions to play a game as opposed to people teaching our children and saving lives and putting their own on the line, yes, they can't pay these folks enough!
From where I've been, I can complain about what I hated about those places, but why? I made my life change to where I want to be, finally.
Do I have complaints here? No. No I don't. Is there traffic going to and coming from work? Yes, but I am employed and that is just part of it. I am making more money here than anywhere I've lived. Partly because I don't pay state and don't have to pay for things I used to, so I get more money in my paycheck, plus I am making more than I did in either state, I guess I am lucky from what I have read. Good for me! I left NJ for the same reasons I have been reading from folks that have lived in FLA for a long time. The area I came from (NJ)was ruined by overdevelopment. BTW, not everyone from NY/NJ are bad. I am a yankee and proud of it, thank you. I have met the most friendliest people, here and have been made to feel very welcome.
Also, the infrastructure is accomodating the development...in the long run. Just experiencing growing pains right now. The scape is still beautiful and I hope to live the rest of my life here.
I wake up in the morning, make my coffee and enjoy my view of the pool, palm trees and my canal. It's a very peaceful way to start my day. On my way to and from work, there is the traffic but I get to see the views of the foliage and the water from the bridge, instead of just buzzing right past it. By the time I get home, I am still relaxed, make a nice dinner and enjoy the evenings. I am in a great place and will enjoy each minute of it.
Thanks for listening a good luck to everyone trying to find their happy places

So true, I was born and raised there and it's in my blood, no doubt. Times change and for me, not for the better, so I left. I had always planned to live here, anyway and the opportunity finally came and I grabbed it quick.
My family is still there, but ya know? It's a 2 hour plane ride to visit which is fine by me. Plus they can visit me which is just as fine

[mod] cut [mod/] personal attack

Florida is going to be going on a downward spiral for the next decade or so. Anytime you have a massive sprawl of population it leads to major problems. But you can't blame these people for trying to get out of their situation in the Northeast. I'm sure if Florida was its own country you would be very happy if these people were never allowed to set foot down here. I understand both situations is what I'm trying to say and I know you lived your happy life with cheap cost of living and had a lot of spending money, warm weather, nice restaurants, low traffic volume, entertainment, etc. But then they wanted a piece of that too so it lead to traffic jams, urban sprawl, and high housing. I also agree that they could do a better job assimilating and trade in the Brooklyn attitudes, NY accents, and Yankee hats for a Florida Marlins cap and a laid-back attitude. But they don't. Those people have been pushed around their entire lives, lived a fast lifestyle, and have been told a lot of promises that were never delivered. A lot of them are angry people. It's like if you beat a dog down its entire life since it was a puppy, just because it has a new owner it doesn't mean the dog is going to all of a sudden be nicer. If they wouldn't have came here, it would have been somewhere else. It just so happened that I-95 was a convenient drive. There are people from AZ complaining about the exact same thing about Californians ruining their state.

Thumbs down Not Nice

MMmmm, last I checked, this is AMERICA, the US of A and in the US of A, we have the freedom to move anywhere we want and who are the "they" you refer to, to keep anyone from moving anywhere? Oh, and by the way, since you seem to know that ALL NY'ers and people from the NE lived in dumps but are driving your costs up??? How do you figure that? Have you been to everywhere up north to be able to say this with intelligence? Just for YOUR information, I lived in a sleepy little sea shore town that was beautiful but got ripped to shreds by development, taxes, people, etc. It's ashame, and not dissimilar to what you feel happened to you, but you know what? Rather than bad mouth the people and the politics, I MOVED. Change happens. If YOU don't like it. MOVE. So much for that southern charm that you seem to be so proud of, and more rude than anybody I have seen, northern or southern.
Finally, this forum is to help people find out about the areas they are considering to relocate or just to find out general information. Why are you here?

Delray Patty will become famous soon enoughDelray Patty will become famous soon enough
I'm with Jackie..I moved here from Pa. via N.J..and I love Florida..No I didn't
sell a big expensive house in N.J..to move to Pa...I rented an apt. and raised
3 children working part time and putting them through private Catholic school
with no one's help thank you...when we finally had enough down payment for
a house I could no longer afford a house in my hometown of N.J..so who would I blame then? so we moved to the Pocono MTs..and we loved it...we
moved because my husband retired and we downsized..who needed a 4
bedroom house when all the kids were gone? so sorry if you don't like us
coming to Fl to live....GET OVER IT...like Jackie said this is America and we
can move where we want, when we want....oh, and I didn't build a fancy
big house here either...I bought a resale...so I'm not adding to your urban
sprawl...by the way..I don't think the people in Florida minded all those years
making the big money off of tourists every winter season, ask some of the
people who own the restaurants..they can't wait for the winter season

All,

Interesting opinions! I have life in the state for 25 years and move all over due to military assignments. Our State is one that everyone in the world envies. The state primary resource is Tourism and tourism is made by entirely on individuals that will come and spent their money and we benefit or suffer from it.

For some is you own a business that capitalizes on tourism we want more, because this translate to better income and greater chances to excel in life. For others this might be a negative driver because we don’t get anything in return. Just traffic jams, long lines at the bank, supermarket, etc.

Tourism drives this state, the greater, bigger, and faster attractions the more expensive it is to survive. But went I get a buyer for my house, business, or land, the profit is normally triple the initial investment.

We must also note that many of us vacation outside the state just to avoid the tourism, but we become tourist at other states and create the same situation.

Please keep everything within the “RULES” so we don’t get this one closed. Great Topic!!!

Yes I agree there are many rude people posting on here. You are totally contradicting yourselves when you say Floridians are "laid back" friendly Southerners. If you were really friendly and laid back, you wouldn't have a problem sharing your state with others. Last I checked, we live in the USA..freedom for everyone to live where they choose. You can't sit there and put labels on people that come from other states to live in Florida. I lived in Michigan for 24 years of my life and Florida for 3. I am back in Michigan after getting divorced, but I plan on moving back after I get my Master's degree. So are the Floridians that don't want newcomers to share in their love of the state going to hold up picket signs and boycott people moving to Florida?! Just because you have run into bad situations with people from the East Coast, doesn't mean all people that move to Florida are causing it to become a "slum." Instead of badmouthing people that move to the great state of Florida, use some of your charming "Southern hospitality" to welcome them and maybe make some new friends....
