We are considering Orlando or Tampa... can you tell me what you love about Orlando?

Wow. Last time I checked, nobody (even meteorologists and climatologists) had ANY idea where hurricanes were going to hit.

I grew up in South Florida and only remember a couple of hurricanes that we were bad.
I'm currently in NC and the NEWS stations have been talking about the National Hurricane Forecasting Center's prediction of hurricanes hitting the GA, SC and NC area (even VA) more this year. They study the patterns, and although they are only predictions, there is info out there. Maybe that is what BackToFLA is talking about.
My Grandmother is in Virginia Beach and she heard her local news talking about the same story.
Weather patterns have been studied and I remember a few years back SC and NC got a few major hurricanes and FL ended up with less. Lets hope so for all those paying high insurance rates. Hope the Natl. Hur. Center is correct as many Floridians could use the break!!
Best of Luck to you all.

Your mentality creates your reality. If you don't like the area you are in do something about it rather then making blanket generalizations about a state. MOVE ALREADY! There is nothing worse then knowing what you want and not having the guts to do something about it.

Oh geez, the "seniors and property tax" thing is so sad...
As far as "going for it!"- You only live once, right?!

NE Florida is finally experiencing its "Boom." Been here since 1990, when it was sweet, green, peaceful--real Southern (and that's something coming from a native New Englander ! ).
The job market here was never good, esp. for professional women. The economy is based on the service industry (tourism). The pay is very low, and generally does not allow one to actually live in, for example, St. Augustine.
All of St. Johns County is sold. It's now being developed. Real estate prices are out of reach. There is no affordable housing left, altho' prices have remained static for the past 6 months. Property taxes have gone up along with the prices of houses... it's almost impossible for young families to "move up" as their parents did.
The cllimate?! Please see the "Heat and Humidity" thread--they've said it all! I have only one thing to add: Florida ground water smells like sulfur, or what I call, "That good ol' Florida smell!."
Never been a beach person, so that doesn't do it for me. I prefer the mountains. The "highest" point in Florida? Two Egg, Florida, in the panhandle, with an elevation of 325 ft.
Insects? Galore. Snakes? Oh, yeah... 67 species, with 6 venomous. That includes Florida's best-kept secret: beach dunes of the Atlantic Coast are prime habitat for the Eastern Diamondback, which grow to enormous proportions and are aggressive! Let's not even discuss the 'gators... or hurricanes.
We moved here from Arizona for hubby's job. Do not know where we will retire, but it sure won't be in Florida! LOL!

you should try western nc
there are probably more venomous snakes in nc than fla. but the good thing about nc, your neighbors will catch 'em and eat 'em for dinner. certain areas of fla have "sulfury smelling" water, but the air here is better than in nc. in nc, all the plants and fumes from these plants are trapped in the valleys. very uncomfortable, and if you have allergies, forget about it. my allergies havent bothered me once since moving here.
trade in the mtns with snow and the toothless for warmer climate, beautiful beaches, and plenty to do ... never. and this is coming from a native floridian glad to be back!!! and since i've been back in fla, i dont have to hear all the "n" words and "jews" comments. Some ppl just THINK others are friendlier elsewhere. try being black or hispanic in little redneckville, nc.
sorry, just had to express myself a little bit!!!
