How people are getting along in Florida?
I am planning to move to one of the Southern States and Florida is on the list. Can anyone tell me how people are getting along in Florida? I have been living in New York City for nearly 30 years and it is time to move on. How about Lakeland?
Any input right here is greatly appreciated.

It depends on how much they want to get along. It also depends on where in Florida. Ironically, a lot of posters on here will steer you to some of the most depressed parts of the state because the "economy is better", when, in fact, they are just cheaper and less crowded, so cost of living and lifestyle preference also plays a major role. Of course, Florida is being affected by the nationwide economic downturn, and proportionally, more people are affected than many other parts of the country, especially for those in real estate, construction, or lending/financial positions. Inflation is also especially high in metropolitan South Florida, but all and all, people are getting along, like anywhere else.
I hope this answers your question.

What areas of Florida interest you? I can tell you a decent amount about the southern part of the state and the Orlando area, and other posters can fill in on other parts of the state.

Florida is doing pretty poor right now Florida's Unemployment Rate Highest In 14 Years . Just make sure you have an excellent job lined up beforehand. If you are retired and don't need to work it might be okay. I honestly would choose either Tennessee or one of the Carolinas if it were up to me due to the better quality of life there (friendlier people, more jobs, cheaper housing and insurance, etc, etc.)

It is also one of the worst places for jobs Unemployment Stays at 7.9% | theledger.com | The Ledger | Lakeland, FL. Feel free to ask me any questions about the area via DM. You might not like the answers though but you'll get the truth.

Florida in general has a high unemployment rate, not just Lakeland. It also is going to depend on your line of work.
As a place to live, I find it beautiful and quite pleasant. Lakeland also sits almost equidistant between Tampa and Orlando, so if one doesn't mind a commute, you can work in either city less than an hour to either one.
If you have specific questions about Lakeland, I am a Florida native and have lived here for over a year now and like it quite well. I have also lived in other areas of the central west coast of Florida as well. I personally love the whole region and would not live anywhere else.
You do have to remember that some folks move here and are not happy, maybe it's just not "home" or they do not adjust or have personal problems which will color their view of an area.
Here are some nice links about Lakeland:
