A little information about Citrus County
I haven't ever lived in Citrus Co. but my grandmother has a vacation home in Inverness and I go almost every year to vacation there. I wouldn't really recommend the area around Inverness to anyone under 50 just because it is mostly a retirement community and I know from experience that it's very frustrating. I don't know much about Citrus Co. other than Inverness/Floral City area but I do like that you're very close to the gulf and not very far from Tampa/St. Pete area. Also, I know it's only about 2 hours from Daytona too so it's got a nice location in the state and the weather isn't ridiculously hot. Good luck!

We were just driving all around Floral City yesterday. The whole area up there is very nice, but very small and rural and pretty far removed from anything. There are almost no restaurants and we did not even see any larger grocery store, and no shopping. You would have to be the type who didn't need amenities nearby, and willing to drive quite a ways for your needs. It wouldn't be for me.

I live in Inverness in Citrus County. Gypsychic is right about Floral City, it is the town next to Inverness and doesn't have much shopping. But Inverness has Publix, Winn-Dixie, Kash n Karry, super Wal Mart, Save A Lot, etc, along with restaurants like Applebees, Outback, Ruby Tuesdays, plenty of fast food, Walgreens, CVS, etc, etc. The population here has changed and while there are a lot of retirees, many younger families have moved in, looking for a better quality of life. The summer high temperature is a lot higher than 82 degrees, more like 95 with a heat index of 102 on very humid days. Inverness is a nice community, people are friendly here but they don't get in your face too much. Housing is still affordable, if you look around. Let me know if you need further information.

citrus county is very nice. with an interest in horses I feel marion county might be a better area for you. There are some very affordable acreage on and off of hwy 484 which is also not very far from Ocala or Beverly Hills which both towns offer ample shopping of all sorts. This area also keeps you in the heart of horse country and vets. feed stores all your needs for horses. Best of luck where ever you choose.

I've lived in Citrus County for 6 years and i like it here. I think Floral City would be a nice place to purchase land for horses.it is rural and not much out there but a trip to Inverness is only 15 minutes away. Inverness is situated around a 7 chain lake which i live across the street from and enjoy boating, fishing and even swimming in at the city park. We have a lot of things to do in Inverness. For kids there is roller skating, bowling, an oval race track on Saturday nights, the lake, and oh did i mention swimming with the Manatees in Crystal River? Oh an i don't know where you got the high temperature reading but it is very easily 95 degrees or more in the summer months. Inverness has a population of about 7500 and we have all the grocery stores mentioned above and of course a Super Walmart and Lowes. Plenty of restaurants. we have many festivals in town like craft fairs, high speed boat races on the lake and just different things like that. It really is a nice place to raise a family. Crime is not too bad as we have police cars just about everywhere it seems. The schools are great. I have a blind child whose been in Public school both elementary and now middle school and they have done great with her as i've had bad experiences in other schools before i moved here.

Daniellefort is definitely correct about the schools here; they do go the extra mile for children with handicaps, and any child who is having difficulty is given the extra time and attention they need to help them succeed.

pine ridge is very nice & most of the people back there have horses. i believe there is a community horse run also. i live in beverly hills which is just across the road from pine ridge. there isn't any stores in the immeadiate area. walmart is about 15 minutes away, publix 5-7 min & winn dixie 5 min. there is a beall's (department store) & movie theatre (small) also about 15 min away. i would say overall it is a nice area & not too populated which i personally like. ocala is also nice & very horse friendly. i like citrus county better though because it's close to crystal river/homosassa springs/inverness. also there are more hills in the area. if you have any further questions feel free to contact me.

You don't want to live in Wildwood in my opinion especially anywhere near I-75. It's a very busy trucker stop area and though people don't see it, there are homeless campsites living all over Wildwood and along the interstate. I know for a fact cause they used to come to the free clinic i worked at to be treated for everything you can imagine. Now between Inverness and Wildwood (Hwy 41) there's a stretch of open land you might look into but that's a busy highway. I know just 4 miles outside of Inverness on that road is a horse stable and horse rides open to the public. In my opinion if I was to buy land for horses, I would look in Inverness going out 581 by Applebees towards Brooksville. lots of open fields and horse ranches out there. I just love to drive through that area cause it's so country setting yet close to town.
