Default Florida Furniture

Just bought a home in Citrus County. Can't wait to furnish it so we can snowbird for a couple of years, then move down permanently.

Don't want to bring our dark heavy furniture down from up North - it will look out of place.

Is there a Florida Furniture style? What stores are good to buy furniture? Which are the ones to avoid?

Thank you.

My personal favorite is dark rattan (not wicker), but your style will be best. Buy what you love and enjoy it! I think you furnish according to the style of home, though. Dark rattan might look funky in an urban loft. LoL! How about consulting an interior decorator for design assistance?

I agree with TampaKaren, it really depends on you and the house.. I had rattan sectional with a peach color material, might not be your style or color but we liked it.

You can find just about anything you want in Tampa, but you will probably have to get it at name stores who sell all different kinds of furniture.

It's all about your personal taste. I DO know, however, that stores like Roomstogo have a "coconut creek" collection, which is fairly tropical in feel.

I would think that something british carribean colonial is a good style for a Florida home, or something Spanish or mediterranean inspired.

For accessories, Bealls has "florida style". They have nice nick nacks and the like. Really, its what ever you like. I have dark furniture in my house because I like it. I really dont care what the style is of the area, I buy what I like and what I think looks good... I also have bought stuff from rooms to go, and have not been disappointed.

Where are some of the furniture stores? We're moving to Homosassa in the spring and are considering leaving most of our furniture behind.

They have some really nice furuniture, especially living and dining room sets. If you are going to be a snowbird and want to say some money, I would suggest looking at some of their stores. Some of their pieces look almost brand new.

Keep with your personal taste, don't go crazy trying to get the "Caribbean" look just because it's Florida!!

When I moved down I thought "all that dark furniture's not gonna fit in Florida". Well, I gave away almost all my antiques, tapestries & "northern" stuff & guess what?? After 5 years I started "yearning" for the stuff I gave away & now I've spent yet MORE money finding just what I'd left behind!!

So go with what you're comfortable with, & if it ends up "eclectic", then so be it!! Just don't be stupid like me!!

Strange that you should mention that. I just came back from the "Nature Coast" where I bought a lot of accessories at Bealls (pronounced Bells for some reason). they had a Veterans Day Sale + senior discount so I went a little bit wild.

Hmmmmmmmmm! My wife and I are palnning a move to Florida in about four years. We, too, have dark furniture and have been considering selling it before we move rather than paying to have it moved. Now your post is giving me second thoughts. Thanks for sharing your experience.
