The unfairness with the current property tax and current proposals could be fixed with a compromise. Instead of getting rid of the property tax altogether reduce it to 1% or .5% across the board for everyone (business, snowbirds, everyone) and raise the sales tax by a smaller 1 or 1.5% (equal to/less than states like California) to cover the shortfall. No one looses in this scenario except for the homesteader who has been in a house homesteaded for longer than 5 years. The votes come from everyone else. The proposal is fair to everyone and most people from other states are already used to that type of taxation. People would no longer be locked in their houses and unfair laws that were written for retirees could be amended. The rich pay their fair share. Local government would not have to worry about fighting for their part of the sales tax money (or at least not as much) because they would still have half of their revenues coming from local property tax.
