I do agree with visiting local stores to see the type of people you will be around. We went up north to look at homes and that is the first thing the Realtor said to us. You should visit local stores to make sure you feel OK. Any time you move to a new area it takes time. Have your husband go out with co-workers to get a feel of the area. I can say working for the school system in Pasco I feel safe. It also depends on how much parents are involved.

Cltsig and Kimwick - Thanks for the replies and advice. It was very helpful. This whole moving thing has made me a bit uneasy. I have lived in large cities before but it has been so long ago that I am really worried about this next move. I am really worried that it will be more difficult to adjust this time around because we have spent the last 8 years in a small, rural town and we really like it. By rural, I do not mean WT and trailer parks. If you haven't lived in an area like we live it would be hard to understand what it is we want from an area that we are going to live. I realize that we are not going to find an area exactly like where we live now but we do want to find something as close to it as possible.
Everyone on here has been so generous and kind with their advice. I really do appreciate it.

We lived in Land O Lakes for almost two years. Plenty of nudist colonies, but no nudists. You would never know they were here unless you read about them. Frankly, the "folks" you see at Walmart are a lot scarier.
Great place to live with easy access to major roads leading to the airport, malls, etc.

I don't really know about the rest of Hernando county but I live in Spring Hill, have been here 3 months and can't wait to leave. Thank goodness I chose to rent before buying.

Please elaborate. It would be helpful to know the why behind the statement.

I have lived in Kansas City MO, Phoenix AZ, Boulder CO, Wichita KS and a few others and Spring Hill is by far the worst in my opinion, people are unfriendly, customer service is absolutely non-existent, the worst of any town I have ever been in and not just at the restaurants, also the stores and home services such as house sitting, cleaning etc... Other problems, traffic does not flow well for a town this size, lack of shopping options, drainage problems, and I'm sure there is more. I love going to Tampa and getting back to civilization. Anyway, just my thoughts... I went and bought a house in Destin this week, can't wait to move.

Got it. How do the property prices, taxes, and insurance compare in Destin?

Jewels, what area are you planning on moving to? I understand you live in Michigan and are moving to Fla, too? Did you use to live in Fla. and if you did, are you returning to the same area?

Jammie,
I live in Ky. We are looking at the area near Tampa in Pasco/Hernando counties, and maybe Citrus to be near my husband's office. We are a little bit undecisive right now about what we want to do. The housing market and the major differences between where we currently live and Tampa are a big part of our uncertainty.
We are trying to decide if another part of FL, or even southern GA will work for us.
I have lived in FL before. I have lived throughout the Miami area, in various parts of Orlando, and in Tallahassee. We are not planning on returning to any of these areas.
The Miami area is definately not a consideration. If we had to move to that area, probably the closest I would consider would be Pembroke Pines and Cooper City.
Same for Orlando, not interested. We can visit on vacation. If we did look there, it would be in Seminole county. The Lake Mary area is really nice.
If we do consider another part of FL, I have considered northern FL but not Tallahasse. Mostly the small towns around Tallahassee. There is a lot of property in northern FL on acreage for decent prices. I haven't checked to see if they are decent for that area, but they are decent when compared to other areas.
I know you are considering Ocala. Is that still your plan, or are you having doubts?

Spring Hill wasn't even on the map a few years ago, now it's the biggest town in Hernando County. Virtually everyone in the town is from NY/NJ.
