Default Vehicle Transportation Ferries from South Florida to the Bahamas?

I'm considering moving to the Bahamas, but need to know the answer to two questions:

-Will any ferries transport my car to the Bahamas, and if so what is the cost?
-What is the policy of the Bahamian government to allow cars of ex-pats on the islands and is there a tax or duty to have it or register it there?
-Will I even need it to get around?

Thanks,

-CS

I'd love to know too, just as a matter of curiosity.

Heck, I'd like to know of any (relatively) high-speed ferries just for people, too. I know there used to be one, but I heard it stopped operating a few years ago.

Don't look for "ferry" companies -- you need a "freight forwarding" company that specializes in automotive transport to the Caribbean/Bahamas. Most of them will be out of Miami or Ft Lauderdale

Most governments now publish their current duty/tariff books online:
http://www.bahamas.gov.bs/bahamasweb...apter%2087.pdf

Depending on your Visa and length of stay, most countries have an allowance for "personal property/posessions" you bring with you.

Obviously, you will have to pay to register and title your vehicle:
The Government of the Bahamas - RTD New Vehicle Registration

You would be advised to sell your car there in advance of your expected departure, rather than shipping it back. (This could take up to 6 months and the "urgency" of your departure date will make you easy pickings if you wait to do so at the last minute! )

Most people on islands get around by Vespa scooters or those tiny 3-wheel pickups you see on golf courses. Some islands use those open electric cars (not golf carts) because electricity (in most cases) is overall cheaper than fuel. The only issue this would cause is during rain and the need to haul something or someone. You could always hire a cab, car, truck or transport company if the situation arises.

I would also check about auto insurance for especially storm damage, flooding, theft and vandalism.

Oh, and be advised that most islands will have a hefty duty on auto parts -- and it might take 2-3 weeks for them to be shipped and clear customs! (or pay a FedEx or UPS premium fees)

Good Luck!
