Recommended State / RV Parks in the Keys?
Hi everyone -
Looking to camp down in the Keys for a month or maybe two starting in Feb. of 2009. Does anyone have any suggestions for campsites that would be a good place to stay? I would be car and tent camping.
I realize that it's the peak season down there during that time, but any advice on places to stay, things to do, etc. would be great.
I know that there are alot of state parks in the Keys, but don't know if they allow camping.
Also, I have a dog, so the campsites would need to be pet friendly, along with safe.
Thank you!

I believe Bahia Honda park has campsites. And John Pennekamp may or may not- I'm not certain.
Are you looking for peace or action?
Key West is a little crazy but the islands between Marathon and Key West are a little more mellow.
Marathon is a large, commercialized island and you may be able to find a campground there.

Bahia Honda makes John Pennenkamp look like a dump. It is a LOT nicer, it is isolated, and it is absolutely beautiful.

Go to floridastateparks.org ASAP to make reservations because February is high season and there may not be any spaces left. I know that some parks keep spaces open for drive-ups but it's a LOOONG way down and not a lot of alternatives if they're full.
I've RV'ed at both Bahia Honda and Pennekamp and both were great. A little known state park called Long Key also offers camping, it's near Bahia Honda.
A great dog-friendly (county) park is DeSoto Park off the tip of St. Petersburg. It's not in the Florida state park system, it's county run. Do a google search. I liked it more than the Keys.

Thanks so much! I checked out the FL state parks website and it has alot of info on there..do you have to pay to reserve your spot? At this point, I don't know exactly when I'm leaving...
We'd be looking for both, peace and action, although, we're not much into the bar scene anymore, and would be doing lots of bike riding, snorkeling, hanging out, etc...
Thanks everyone! Keep the ideas coming!

I just took out my book "Florida Camping" by Marilyn Moore (2007) and read that pets are prohibited at the 3 Fl state parks mentioned: Bahia Honda, Long Key and Pennekamp.
Best Fla camping book there is, consider buying it and save headaches.
