Clearwater
Factors include crime, traffic, cost of living.
While there is not a huge difference in any of those factors, all of them together add up.

Ft. Lauderdale because it is in South East Florida and part of the Miami metro area. You will have access to better food, culture, and activities.

Well Clearwater has some of the nicest areas I've ever seen in my life, and some of the worst. Is Ft. Lauderdale bi-polar like this?

Ft. Lauderdale. I prefer South Florida in general to the Tampa/St. Pete area. Aside from South Florida having more family and friends, it has more parks, cities, unique areas within cities, museums, zoos, shopping, etc. that I love or that I love more (except for maybe the Dali museum, which is in St. Pete), and it also has my favorite sports teams--especially the Marlins and Dolphins, although that's probably because I grew up in South Florida and spend far more time there. Ft. Lauderdale wouldn't be my first choice for someplace to live in South Florida (I just do not like the "feel" of it as much as other places), though I'd pick it over Clearwater, even if the two weren't near anything else, but I'd especially pick it since Ft. Lauderdale is conveniently located more or less in the middle of a bunch of stuff I love visiting.

Sort of, but US1 is the dividing line.
