lol, let them go ahead and do this. As if the state of Florida wasn't already teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, now this.

Maybe the voters will finally wake up and send all of Tallahassee packing once school systems start filing for bankruptcy, roads fail to be repaired, crime rises to unignorable levels because of the inability to fund law enforcement, among other things.

They may as well abolish property taxes since Florida homes are now worthless.

All states are trying to figure out ways to off-set the revenue drops. Housing Taxes have dropped substantially do to the mortgage crisis. They will not be eliminating or reducing property taxes anytime soon. They need to figure our ways to pay teachers, firemen, police, govt. employees, and tons of needed infrastructure improvements. Tax payers are the ones that raise the water and float all the boats. Prepare yourselves, there is a lot more of what we've been going through yet to come. Right now, most states are running out of money to pay for vital services.

I would like to know how many in the state of Florida rent as opposed to own homes in percentages. If the amount of people who rent as opposed to own is higher then I would expect even more people attempting to leave Florida. Wages are already low and people are already under a burden to make ends meet. Astronomical sales tax could be the catalyst to get many to leave or get them to start planning to do so.

It is probably not a good idea to believe things you read on that particular website.

I suggest you read the proposal carefully. Do not be fooled by the hype. It doesn't abolish property taxes, it abolishes ad valorem property taxes. A parcel tax, a tax based on the square footage of the parcel, or a tax based on the square footage of the improvements, would all be legal even if the proposal were to become law. Heck, you could charge all three simultaneously on the same parcel.

For your info, ad valorem taxes generally make up the vast majority and in some cases all of one's tax bill. Eliminating property taxes would greatly benefit those on low and/or fixed incomes by saving them money that they need to pay the utility bills and to have food on their tables. Also, property taxes, especially when they are in the thousand/multithousand dollar range, and especially how they are levied, are a big barrier to independent living for persons with disabilities.

Especially in tough times like we see right now most people are struggling and for good reason they are concerned about having a job! paying essential bills take priority homeowners associations are another excess money drain i feel the other major obstacle is Property taxes they need to be eliminated in exchange for a non-essentials sales tax at least this way people have a choice to pay for it when they can afford it if you get rid of the property taxes you will see the real estate and construction industry improve not to mention every business that owns commercial real estate you would see tremendous improvement in our economy because the tax burden would just shift like a laser beam from struggling businesses and homeowners to whomever was doing well enough to buy non-essential items the cost to pay for essentially the schools will shift to people doing well buying non-essential items. Just because someone owns a home or business doesn't mean they should or can afford to have recurring bills attached to it! The key to a business surviving and anyone good in business knows this is to keep your overhead as low as possible unfortunately this cardinal rule is constantly ignored by political figures in government spewing out unfunded mandatory requirements!! This would strengthen our small and large businesses but i doubt many political figures have the common sense to see it! endproptaxes (08/12/2009, 8:05 PM )
