Most of the folks who move to St. Lucie County (where Fort Pierce is located) end up in Port St. Lucie, about 6 miles or so south of Fort Pierce proper. Within Fort Pierce itself, there are some lovely neighborhoods of older houses with a great deal of charm. But, it is an old Southern town, and there are also some areas which are, to put it mildly, less desirable. It can be difficult to find the right mix.

Downtown Fort Pierce has been transforming itself over the last several years and is a desirable destination with the waterfront, restaurants, performing arts theater, boutique shopping and more, but really no place to live. If condos are your style, a developer is constructing brand new waterfront condos in downtown Fort Pierce, where you can easily walk to nice things, but I suspect they will be pretty darn expensive, at least by my standards.

There's a lot of diversity in the Fort Pierce area, from beachfront apartments to country trailers with everything in between. It would help to know what you specifically have in mind.
