Good city for a granola girl and rocker husband?
What would be a good florida city for us? We want to live near the ocean, and in a health-concious, open-minded area... someplace I can find a place to do yoga and buy a wheatgrass shot, and where my husband can find people to form a band...
We were thinking Sarasota, because he's from the West Coast, and I read that Sarasota has a "West Coast feel."
We'd like to be somewhere near hiking.
We're young, in our 20's, but we're not really bar and club people.
Additionally, we are both teachers. I'm a high school English teacher, and I enjoy working with the "alternate" kids, but I'd like to work where there's a good student-to-teacher ratio. My husband is elementary, sped. So, any teacher insight would be appreciated, as well!
Any advise on where NOT to move would also be helpful!
Thanks so much!

I think Sarasota would be a good fit for you & your husband. However, (and you will hear this from many people on this board) don't move here until you have found a job. School districts across the state of Florida are going through budget cuts, and Sarasota is no different.

Yoga!!
My wife is into yoga as well and she feels there is more offered in Fort Lauderdale and Miami than on the west coast...so if you are not set on Sarasota try Fort Lauderdale...if you decide to try the east coast I will send you the yoga studios she likes...

Thanks; we'll definately look into Ft. Lauderdale, although it might be a little too "big" for us.

A wheatgrass shot - hmmmm, I've never had one of those, is it an alcoholic beaverage? If so, I'll prepare my kidneys for a new adventure. LOL
Where are you from?
Teaching English . . . isn't that going against the grain? I thought that was a thing of the past. Great Idea though!
Kidding aside, good luck finding something!

I also think Sarasota would be a good fit for you and your husband but like ADIP mentioned, the job market is tough right now. I know there have been a lot of cut backs in the school systems lately. You might want to start your job search here: Sarasota County Schools Human Resources
My kids go to Pine View School, we love it there and it seems that most of the teachers stay for years. That's usually a good sign.
Whole Foods and The Granary are two places you'd probably like to shop.
Good luck with your search

Big House, this is a wheatgrass shot It's actually... well... grass. It's the grass of a wheat plant. It's made into juice and has lots of vitamins and minerals. You can find them at most juice bars. I currently live in Fairhaven, MA, where there are, sadly, no juice bars. So, I'd like to move somewhere where I can visit one regularly. Odd criteria, I know, for moving somewhere, but we all have those little things that symbolize bigger things for us, you know? Thanks for making me laugh!

I agree, Sarasota would be a great fit - Sarasota is now the "greenest city in the state" as far as sustainability, and in the last 15 years or so has reinvented itself and become a lot younger. There is and always has been a lot of yoga and alternative medicines, and lots and lots of health stores large and small. We also have some fabulous dining options here in all price ranges.
That said, you MUST secure jobs before moving here, job market is always tight here, and it is worse than ever right now due to the economy. If you can get employment, I can almost guarantee you will LOVE it here!
Good luck to you!

YUM! It looks like it has a nice frothy head on it like one of my other favorite beverages. Boy things are going to be healthy for me down there. Between that and Swamp Cabbage and YOGA, and Rockin' out to the band you guys are going to form, I'll be in great shape soon! lOl
Sarasota and that whole SWFL area will be a very good choice for you I agree with my friends SoFLGal and gypsychic!
