I'm originally from FL, but I am definetly up "Nawth" now. Paw Paw, MI, it snows as much here as just about anyplace in the nation. Even Chicago and further north in MI don't get it as bad as we do. Like a previous poster said it hasn't hit over freezing for the hi temp in almost a month. The roads are horrible, salt is useless unless the temp gets above 15 or 20. My heat don't work so good in my truck so when I drive I have to switch hands every mile or so, one on the steering wheel and the other in my coat pocket, with gloves on. I left a bottle of Windex in the truck the other night and could hammer nails with it the next morning, I didn't even know that stuff could freeze. Every day you wake up and just about bust your arse on the icy steps to go climb in cold car to take a white-knuckle ride on black ice to get to work. This is my last winter in the frozen white hell.

To me "up north" is anything north of Tennessee/Carolinas.

But then again, I'm one of the few transplants not from "up north"

South Texas is pretty much the same latitude as Florida.

I agree, there are some areas up north that are dangerous to live in, whether it be due to crime, or even the natural elements, due to certain desolate areas. So it's important to have a cell phone at all times, I think, anywhere you live. It's also important to choose a good place to live.

Unfortunately, where I chose to live in FL was not necessarily the best place, so rather than make another move in FL, my wife and I choose to move back "home" to the north, where we grew up and where we remembered enjoying life, it was a matter of quality of life for us, irregardless of the weather.

In another post, I said the cold weather didn't bother me, I flew up to Chicago when it was -25 with the windchill. I layered up and dressed properly, and limited my exposure outdoors. When it "warmed" up to 20 degrees, I was basically just in a sweater and sweatshirt, no coat. And I was fine with it. I guess growing up north I can adjust to the cold quicker than I ever adjusted to the heat in FL, and I've lived in FL for at least 10 years now.

Enjoy your life down here.
Not to beat a dead horse here, BUT the interstate between Madison and Janesville is not "desolate". Madison is the capitol of Wisconsin, Janesville is a fairly large city, (a HUGE GM dependant city, so of course this will change), and this interstate is how one would get to Chicago from these cities as well as most of the rest of the state of Wisconsin. And having a cell phone doesn't help you any if the roads are blocked. One of the trapped people was actually a reporter for one of the Madison TV stations, and of course they put him live on the air from his cell phone, so it wasn't like no one knew what was happening. There was just nothing that could be done with the amount of snow that was dumped on the area.
