Don't start skin damage, rapid ageing and cancer at such a young age .....in a place where you can have a tan(or burn) all year round and the only thing to do is go to the beach and ect.

I am not young anymore. I know all about sun protection and what to do. No one should ever get a sun burn in todays world.

Florida is not as cheap as it used to be 15-25 years ago.

Sorry I have done the math, it is cheaper to live in certain areas of Florida comparing as facts I am in now to the towns I have looked into.

My parents moved here in 1993 and bought a three bedroom house in Florida for the price of a car in a deed restricted pool community. My father ended up with skin cancer and damage to his eyes from all their beach obsession. My mother still works for the same wages as she did then with one of the small time pathetic companies that dwindle here.

Why move all the way down to Florida from one extreme to the next.

Extreme, Ohios economy is just as bad as Floridas, we are falling apart here too!
Please stop the crying, many many people are suffering in every state, it NOT JUST FLORIDA people. Look at Michigan, they have Florida beat the heck and back, the entire state in on welfare folks, you would be rich in Florida compared to Michigan and several other states.

If moving for better economy and a lot less snow and freezing....why not try western Washington state where the weather is usually fairly mild all year round with drizzle but nice dry summers.

I have been to Washington State, hate it!! Would not live there if it was free.
Every person has a like and dislike, I want Florida for many reasons, not just the ocean and sun, many many reasons why I want to move to Florida that NOT ONE OTHER state can provide.

This years winter for Washington it is very unusual and extreme. I lived there for 11 years and never had to shovel, wear boots or a scarf. State's minimum wage is $8.55 and has a favorable economy...check out Dept. of Labor statistics and unemployment benefits weekly amounts are higher(if ever needed). Check out the rent of homes and Winco foods grocery stores where they are cheaper and bigger than Walmart foods in Florida. Of course there are people who complain everywhere and don't know they have the best until it is gone.

I would never consider moving to Ohio considering all the people who think that Florida's economy and quality of life is great. How is Ohio compared to the all the rest of the nation?

Ohios economy and housing is equal to Floridas, we are losing better jobs then Florida ever had. When the avg person in 2000 was making 36k per year here and now it is 21 k per year what does that tell you.
You would be insane to move to Ohio. Far more opps in Florida to make money without a job. Heck I know a hot dog vendor who makes 50k per year doing streets, ballgames, festivals, fairs etc. You cannot do that here.

Overall this entire country is a mess, not just Florida. People are blind to see that Florida is not as bad as many other states.
Sure, the real estate market makes it appear it is much worse then others but only because people got greedy and sucked up properties that were falsely appraised. Those people took a risk with their greed thinking they were going to make a killing, now they are crying because they hung on to long to get big bucks and now blame everyone but themselves.

If I am going to live in the poor house I would much rather be a poor man in Florida then any other state. I can pick oranges or peppers if I had to.
I can work 3 min jobs and make it if I had to. I can make money all over Florida doing certain things.
Come to Ohio, you cannot do that.

Something tells me that people who either live in Florida or moved to Florida recently made mistakes that caused them to hate it so bad. How is it some people who live or moved their have no problems but others do?

Fess up, I made a mistake of staying in Ohio all these years, now its time to correct the mistake and move so we can have a real life. My mistake, my decision my problem, not Ohios, not the people, not the city. Mine!

I agree, you can avoid skin cancer in many ways. Not Floridas fault, his fault.

Debunk that your mother is making the same wage she did 17 years ago? Even at minimum wage that would not be possible, but who knows, maybe she's working under the table.

Same wage for 17 years, whos fault? Not Floridas for sure. Did she do anything to make herself more valuable? I do not know of one single person who is doing this anywhere.

Nah. I have a real job. But thanks.

I have exhausted my patience on this board, as well as attempted in the past to use department of labor statistics, job postings, cost of living calculators, and yes, the much vaulted PERSONAL EXPERIENCE CARD to debunk fanciful notions of many of the "Florida sucks so much" crowd around here. Most of the time my posts with statistics get passed over or rationalized. Expected, or course, but I'm not going to do it every time.

If Florida suck so bad, then come to Ohio for a trial, you will be back in Florida within a few months.

If someone is so completely miserable, and so convinced that their impressions and experiences are typical, noteworthy, or more relevant than others, however..... then no amount of statistics is going to change their minds.

Nobody in my family has ever gotten skin cancer and nobody in my family makes the same amount now that they did in the early 1990s. There. Is that a good enough personal experience for you?

Mine also and I have many friends and relatives who live in warm weather states that have never had skin cancer. Its called a personal responsibility.

The OP, a young man, wants to know if he should move to Florida for warm weather, and you suggest Western Washington State. Then you go on to talk about the experiences of your elderly, retired parent. NOT EVEN THE SAME BALLPARK IN SO MANY WAYS. You could at least have suggested SoCal or Arizona. Oh wait. Hot sun and skin cancer there too. Oh. And desert rattle snakes that could kill you if you get bitten. I forgot.

Washington State, OMG, talk about needing some meds!

No, sorry. More than enough knee slapping hijinks here on City-Data to entertain me... in that funny "watching a pity party self help group meeting down at the local high school after hours" kind of way.
If you are basing your info on your parents in Florida then you have a ton to learn, they surely made some poor choices, sorry to be blunt, not being rude at all, but we all can give you handfuls of people who have never had skin cancer, do not make the same wage and love living in Florida.

I see you do this a lot, why try it. Most people will do their homework and decide based on facts and personal experience of themselves and others they personally know.

Just so you will know, anyone looking to move to Florida would NOT LIKE IT IS WASHINGTON STATE. No way no how would that person be happy in Wash.

That would be like telling people who live in Waldo Florida that you would love to live in downtown New York City! Not going to happen.

You can burn/tan just driving in your car everyday to and from work in Florida. You don't have spend your life lying on a beach for that to happen.

I learned my lesson. I will put on SPF 50 EVERYDAY from now on when I go to work in the mornings.

I grew up in Indiana. I graduated from a fine university in my home town - lived at home during this to save money. During my senior year, I decided it was time to leave the "nest" and I only applied to jobs outside the state, preferably in the south. In April of my senior year, I was accepted for a job in Miami! A week after graduation, I was at the job. I say "Go for it!" Your family will probably love to come down and visit you during the winter! I've now been here for nearly 36 years.

I would say make sure you want to be in Florida and forget the hype. I moved here a year ago from D.C. and the beach and warm weather has worn out its welcome. After a while its not so great. The unemployment here is 9% and that is scary. I miss home a lot, but am not sure I can afford to move back yet.

There is so much more than the beach. You can meet people from all over the world, esp. Latin America. The different food is another interesting aspect of living or visiting down here. I love Cuban food, Mexican food, Thai food, Nicaraguan food just to name a few. There are wonderful festivals here, nearly every weekend. I love the Everglades and enjoy hiking. There are lots of interest in nature, bird watching, etc. There are the clubs on South Beach. It is very hot and humid in the summer (June-til early November). The water at the beach gets so warm in the summer (85+°) it is not refreshing....

The air temp in Naples that day was 95 degrees. The water temp was 90 degrees. My daughter said it was like swimming in a hot tub.

Did you not know this before you moved that it is hot in Florida?

Many here call their old town home, if you cannot let go of it and still call it home then you should not have moved in the first place. Just my opinion.

Home is where you live right now, not where you wish you were.

When we move to Florida, Florida will be our home, this is just where I was born and lived, it will no longer be home.

I don't consider Florida home, and I've lived here for a long time. To me, it's just a place to live.
