Not really a mansion at all. 2400sq ft quad level home.
Still expensive at $200k. Thats $83 a foot.

Those estate homes will definately be over $500k in FL(well at least the southern part)
Youd be paying anywhere from $150 to $225 a foot where I live. Average cost appears to be about $175 a foot making it more than double expensive so yea youd be looking at a whopping half million!

I have spent some time in PSL, will add it to my list. The only thing is not much in antiques in that area.
Thats what ebay is for

Quote:
We can deal with that. You have to trade something you hate ( cold ) for something you like ( warm ) and give up something ( space )
Very big tradeoff, id say. Instead of 3 months of cold, youll have 10 months of hot(big a/c bills) and youll have hurricanes instead of snow. Your property taxes and insurance will be higher too.

Do not like Texas at bit. The only town I like when I traveled Texas was Austin, they can keep the other cities, Texas to me ( my opinion ) is one of the dirtest states I have traveled and have been in more then 40 states.

Whats so dirty about Texas? Well it does have some crime and the summers are horrible but its alot more affordable than FL and it has the hot weather you desire.

TriMT7, the snow is beautiful! I would never pay $200k for those medium small houses. You are comparing an expensive area in Ohio with a cheap area in FL. Lets see what we can get elsewhere in Ohio.

5 bedroom vintage house in Cincinnati for $63k. I know someone that lives there and has a good job.

Another very nice house for a reasonable price. You cant touch anything like that in FL. No basement, most are only one story(lots of 2 story houses with an attic that sometimes is considered third story up north) and the houses are beautiful vintage made of bricks.

The cold did me in this year, like to see my kids get to play outside for more then 3 months.

I cant play outside in south FL, its too hot! Back in high school I would suffer so much in physical education class if we had to do anything outside. Its only cold for about 3, maybe 4 months in Ohio. 65 degrees at noon in OH. I really envy you guys, you got the weather I wish I had!

LOL its 65 degrees. Actually I probably would have to open the window with that kind of weather to stay cool. I got the a/c running here in south FL and its 80 in my room with the a/c! I would trade places with you in a heartbeat, you can have my crime, heat, hurricanes and $300k houses while I get nice houses for $50k in your state and great weather, even winter can be good, ill have fun making snowmen and my own ice skate rink in my backyard

That house is allright but NO basement, NO attic, only one story. Very high property taxes and insurance. I want a bigger, better house(with basement and attic) than that one for much cheaper price, low taxes, low insurance. You pay dearly for the previlage of living in Florida and thats the truth.

Default Ohio to Florida

I live in Tampa and came here from Ohio in 1979. We came here because some of our friends moved here and told us how great it was. Coming from a small Ohio town to a large metro area was a culture shock. We adjusted quite well however. The plus side of living here is the weather. the down side is the high crime and the population explosion. Hurricanes are a big concern during the summer months. I have never really been afraid of a storm until Hurricane Katrina. Now I know just what would happen to Tampa if we had a direct hit. Next spring, I am planning on moving back to Ohio. It is with a heavy heart and sadness as this has been my home for so long. My children and grandchildren all live in Ohio. They all went back because of the heat and humidity here in Florida. They hated it and missed Ohio. Also my dad is getting older and needs some help. I will miss it here but will feel relieved to get away from the hurricane seasons.

Looks to me you better run real fast to hear you tell it before you have a heat stroke or get ran over by a hurricane!!!

If your life is on the line like you state then why are you STILL THERE and not here?

Still expensive at $200k. Thats $83 a foot.

I would gladly fork out the extra to be able to go outside more then 3 months.
I spoke with a former co worker riend of mine who moved to Sebring Fla from here 2 years ago and he told me " you can always find a way to get cooled down, but you can not always find a way to stay warm"

He told me he bought a lakeside home for 350k when he moved there, sold it last year for 475k, built another home across the same lake with a boat dock and he told me " Sorry, I will never be back in Ohio unless someone DIES!!"

I told him about many of these post whining about the heat, he said they no nothing about humidity, we can breathe here no matter the temp, in Ohio July-Aug, you cannot breathe !!

Youd be paying anywhere from $150 to $225 a foot where I live. Average cost appears to be about $175 a foot making it more than double expensive so yea youd be looking at a whopping half million!

Thats what ebay is for

Wrong....Ebay has ruined the real antique fun ! I like walkign through the real antiques at Flea Markets, Antique Malls etc. Besides, you cannot find the real good antiques on ebay and have to deal with people not describing the items correctly. I like the hands on.

Nothing better then getting up at 4:30 AM and going to Webster Florida Flae Market, one of the coolest things in the world to do.
And I make darn good money at it too.

I have bought tons of items in Florida Flea Markets and resold them for 3-4 times the money. Items that I have never seen here in the midwest.
I sell in an antqiue mall already in Florida, UPS stuff down to them and I can mark the items up 30-50% higher then here and still sell them. Gosh, what could I do If I lived there and came here to Ohio and took items back.
I think I could make an extra 30k per year just driving back to Ohio a few times per year, buying a load of antiques and taking it back to Florida to sell.

I know an Auction House owner in St. Pete who does just that, her and her hubby come to Ohio, Indiana, Pa and buy up antiques and re sell them in their auction house for tons of profit. They are from Buffalo NY and were the ones who told me, you gotta come to Fla with your antiques, its a gold mine here.

Very big tradeoff, id say. Instead of 3 months of cold, youll have 10 months of hot(big a/c bills) and youll have hurricanes instead of snow. Your property taxes and insurance will be higher too.

Good trade to me. 10 months of hot is perfect !!
A/C bills, 300.00 is boloney.... I had heat bills for my house this past winter over 500.00 !!!

Higher Taxes and Insurance, not a problem. You have to pay for what you want.

Whats so dirty about Texas? Well it does have some crime and the summers are horrible but its alot more affordable than FL and it has the hot weather you desire.

Outside of larger towns that have great upkeep, the smaller cities are falling apart and are not well taken care of. Hotels are filthy, restaurants are not clean etc. Do not like Texas at all. I may only have to travel there a couple more times before I retire, thank goodness.

Your comparing much older houses and apple to pears doing this. If I had time I can show you what I found in Florida that would knock your socks off for this money.

I did find a 2450 sq ft house in Lakeland, with a pool, lanai, .95 acres, brand new for 195k. Now thats a hugggge house with no basement, that size who needs one anyway. Besides when I move, I am not taken my toys with me so no need for a basement.
Prices are coming down, its a buyers market in certain areas, think I will come down in a couple months and grab one of these great deals.

I cant play outside in south FL, its too hot! Back in high school I would suffer so much in physical education class if we had to do anything outside. Its only cold for about 3, maybe 4 months in Ohio. 65 degrees at noon in OH. I really envy you guys, you got the weather I wish I had!

My kids and us play outside in July and August here and we have more heat and "humidity" then you have during that part of the year. We just jump in our pool and cool off, and go at it again.

If you envy us, you are sadly mistaken and have never been to Ohio, Mich, Minne, Wisc. NY, etc in dead winter for a long period of time.

Q: Have you ever been out of Florida and up north during the winter?
Something tells me you are saying things about our great weather and you really have not been here for a long period of time.
When your toes and stiff and frozen, your snot in your nose is froze solid, your fingers are about to fall off, then you can tell me how good we have it.

I have been in your state during every month of the year and for extented periods of time. So I know.
Heck, I was swimming in the Ocean and Pool last March in Florida while it was 13 degrees here at the same time.

LOL its 65 degrees. Actually I probably would have to open the window with that kind of weather to stay cool. I got the a/c running here in south FL and its 80 in my room with the a/c! 80 in your room? Turn off your heat then......
You are a freaken nut, you couldnt buy any house in my neighborhood, let alone Ohio for 50k!!!!!!!! unless you want to live in a dump.
50k wouldnt buy you a used trailer in great condition in my town, sorry, they are not allowed in my town, forgot.

You are not tuff enough to handle our winters, heck you cannot handle 80 in your own home, how would you fair in 20 below zero. You butt would be back in Fla in a day.

If you couldnt play outside in gym class, you wouldnt be able to handle snowmen and ice rinks at 0 degrees.
Once you do it, fun is gone. I would rather build sand castles, at least you can feel your fingers when your done.

Low Taxes, uhmmmm Were do you get that at?
You couldnt afford the taxes in Dublin or Pickerton Ohio....

I pay 3k in taxes for my current home per year. Insurance is not cheap either.

This is a very easy concept, the reason you can get more house and land in those places is that less people want to live there.

This is not rocket science, lots of people want to live in warm, sunny places with palm trees....and less people want to live in the midwest.

I'm sure you could go into the middle of Montana and get a huge amount of land for very cheap. Those who wish to do so, just do it and quit complaining about Florida.

Yes !!! You are so correct, but seems there are a few Floridian posters on this board who bash how bad they have it there and wish they were in the snow, but have lived there for there entire life.

They either bash it to make it appear so terrible or make it out long northerners are not welcome in "their" state.

If it was that bad, wouldn't you leave ?? And they are still there and will be there forever too.

[color="blue"]
What they do not understand is it's America, the land of the free and if they don't like it, move the hell out and make room for us !!!!

And my parents pay $5k taxes which would be at least $10k if we bought it today and not back in 1995. $3k taxes is not bad, I am willing to pay that if it means a nice house. As for insurance, ill just self insure if those insurance companies cant charge a fair rate.

Who says I have to stay inside 9 months? It got to 75 in Ohio today, I would probably be opening my windows or even turn the a/c if im still hot. I am here till I save enough money to leave. Money doesnt grow on trees. Im trying to work my home business and trying different ideas. My friends make thousands a month, I too will be making that once I have the right idea put to action.

If the temperature is above freezing, I can go outside easily. Ohio isnt that cold. North Canada? Now thats a different story. Even states like Montana, North Dakota or Minnesota can get down to -10, -20 or even -30 and throw in windchill and were talking -30 to -50! Ohio got into the low minuses this winter for a day or two(ok ill stay inside) and then warmed up to 20 after the cold front was gone.

I find it easier to stay warm than cool. Too hot? Ill need a/c or a cool shower. Cant have a/c outside and I dont like swimming. Too cold? Wear a jacket to keep warm. Can only take so much cloth off. Summers suck, I am not looking forward to summer here. Gonna have a window a/c unit running 24/7 so I dont melt.

Agreed, just saying it can be found on ebay. I buy most of my coins and candles on ebay and anything else I want for my hobby/collection.

I salute you sir if you can tolerate 10 months of heat and humidity without going crazy. I complain about the heat everyday and dream of cool weather everyday. $500 a month in heat? The sellers selling their house indicate they pay $150 a month! Does your house not have good insulation or is fuel that expensive? I hope Florida lowers their property taxes to make it more affordable for you.

Texas isnt high on my list due to insanely hot summers and crime. But maybe my parents can relocate there, they hate cold and dont mind heat. Houses there are reasonably priced, can get almost 3000 square feet of brand new house for $150k to $175k!

Quote:

I dont care how old the house is, age is just a number. Actually I like early 1900s house because of the era style. As long as the house isnt damaged or can be easily repaired cheaply with minor TLC all is great. I find those old houses nicer than the modern cookie cutters and they are also cheaper which is a double bonus for me.

Got a pic of that one? Does the square feet include the garage? Then its total square feet, would be about 1800 living square feet. To be honest this arent a bad deal because of a huge lot and pool(can cost thousands to install) Yes prices are going down and this is why you can find that type of house for just under $200k. Bet prices have alot more to drop and not just in FL.

Heck, I was swimming in the Ocean and Pool last March in Florida while it was 13 degrees here at the same time.
Been to Toronto in late fall/early winter when I was a little boy. There was snow but it all melted away 3 days later. Been to Toronto in the summer too and the heat wasnt as bad as FL. It did get to 89 degrees which was nearly a record. The next day it was a much more comfortable 75. My parents have lived in Toronto for years and didnt like the winter. But I arent moving this far north, the winters are milder in the northeast than Toronto.

I say your weather is great more often than my south FL weather is great. I like it 50 degrees and it dont usually get down to 50 here. You get 50 degree weather all the time. It felt so good when the rare day I have 50 degree weather. Do you just stay indoors when it gets too cold?

To be honest I have no idea how ill fare in winters that get below zero or prolonged teens. This is why I want to relocate to where the winters are mild and stay above zero. I have not seen any -20 winters(are you talking windchill or actual temps?) in the northeast. Coldest ive seen was -6 on the weather website. Yes im going by stats. What I really need to do is visit the northeast next winter to get a feel for it. It may take a while to acclimate because im a native born Floridian.

80 degrees indoors is not comfortable. Most people keep it 70-75 but my parents couldnt afford to run the a/c 24/7 in order to keep the house comfortable, they pay enough running it at 78 Up north people's houses are 70 without a/c!(except in the winter)

LOL New York is the most expensive location in the US and it gets quite cold there! Do I even have to mention Toronto, Canada? I can name a few cities in the northeast and midwest that are very expensive. Lots of expensive cities in the northeast in NJ, DE, CT, etc. Wyoming and Montana dont appear to have any (real) houses for under $100k and alot of houses are around $200k!

Youve never experienced a hurricane, have you? Oh and without a/c I was soooooooooo miserable I couldnt even sleep! I felt physically ill from the heat. Snow can be fun, build lots of stuff in the snow. Hey sir I will move aside and make room in FL for you. Will you make room in Ohio or somewhere up north for me?

You think nobody ever felt "physically ill" from the cold?

Have you ever experienced a tornado? They may not happen daily in Ohio but they happen enough that I'd think you'd be more concerned.

We lost more people in the Xenia, Oh Tornados then you lost for all of the hurricanes you have had combined.

First of all stop calling me sir, call your Dad that!

If I was your dad, I would had knocked some sense into your head by now.
You have it made and do not know it.

Second, how the hell would you know what it is like being cold when you said it yourself, been to Toronto when I was a little boy.

Pleeesseeee ,stop stating how it is to be cold when you have never been cold.

I pay HIGHER insurance for my current house then the house I looked at in Lakeland !!
I pay HIGHER Taxes on my house here then that house is in Lakeland !!

YOU PAY NO STATE SALES TAX !!!! ( Thank a Northener for that !! )
We pay large amounts.

My city, local and state taxes on pruchases are 8.5%, higher then most Florida Cities.

Who says I have to stay inside 9 months?

You seem to be pretty frail, so I assumed you cannot handle the heat, no way in hell you could survive an Ohio winter.

It got to 75 in Ohio today, I would probably be opening my windows or even turn the a/c if im still hot.

Damn nice here today! Going down to 30's this weekend, didnt last long.
Will take 75-80 average temp like this ALL YEAR AROUND like you got!

I am here till I save enough money to leave. Money doesnt grow on trees. Im trying to work my home business and trying different ideas. My friends make thousands a month, I too will be making that once I have the right idea put to action.

Where will you go? Surely not a cold state because if you think earning a living on the computer is the way to go, only a few get to do that, find a real job and stop whining about the outgo, get some more INGO !!
Its called a real job that makes real money.
Heck, trash pickers at Disney make 15.00 per hour... go there, they have great benefits.

If the temperature is above freezing, I can go outside easily.

How the hell would you know? You have only been up north once when you was little.

Ohio isnt that cold.

Nah, come on up in January, you couldnt handle it for 10 minutes outside.

North Canada? Now thats a different story.

Only nuts live there. Why do you think all the Canadian cars are all over Florida, not by accident !1

Wow, your an Ohio Historian, you must like Ohio to have never been here.

I find it easier to stay warm than cool.

Not going to happen young man..... Your 25 and cannot handle extreme temps... At 45 here in Ohio you would be in bed covered up all day.

Too hot? Ill need a/c or a cool shower. Cant have a/c outside and I dont like swimming.

From Florida and do not like to swim... What the heck do you like?
Candles and Coins... give me a break... 25 year old man who collects candles... I am figuring you out rather easily. 25 years old, mixed up, has allot to say and doesnt say anything.

Too cold? Wear a jacket to keep warm.

Jacket... OMG, you heads in the sand again. Dec-Jan-Feb, you cannot work to go out for long with a JACKET, heavy coat, gloves, boots, hat, scarf etc etc etc.

You are again lost on how or what cold it is.

Can only take so much cloth off. Summers suck, I am not looking forward to summer here. Gonna have a window a/c unit running 24/7 so I dont melt.

Your build cheap, my brother in law works in a factory, next to blast furnaces that temps get to 200 in July and August.. But he's a man and your a boy.
He makes 30.00 an hour so he is fine.

80 and you have to have the A/C on? WHY???

Agreed, just saying it can be found on ebay. I buy most of my coins and candles on ebay and anything else I want for my hobby/collection.

Stop your hobby and collecting and sell what you got to get out of Florida before a storm comes and takes out your coin collection. Didnt your parent explain to you that if you want something bad enough, you have to be willing to give up something in return for it. Sell the damn coins and move to lower Georgia, you would not survive Ohio or upper midwest.

I salute you sir if you can tolerate 10 months of heat and humidity without going crazy.

I am tough, I can handle it without a problem. You will go stir crazy staying in your house in Ohio for 9 months.

I complain about the heat everyday and dream of cool weather everyday.

Bad dreams you are having...... You need to see a doc !

$500 a month in heat? The sellers selling their house indicate they pay $150 a month!

Were is this info? Like to see this.
Yes, 150 per month are for the 800 sq ft houses, my large house is 3 years old, well insulated, well built.

Does your house not have good insulation or is fuel that expensive?

3 year old and well insulated, fuel, who in a new home of today uses fuel?
Fuel is for that house you liked that was 150 years old.
Wait until you buy one like that and try to heat it, you will not be able to afford it.

[color="red"]
I hope Florida lowers their property taxes to make it more affordable for you.

I have done the comparison math, cheaper for me to live in Lakeland Fla then here.
All I am giving up is 300 sq ft and living in a dream world.............

Texas isnt high on my list due to insanely hot summers and crime. But maybe my parents can relocate there, they hate cold and dont mind heat. Houses there are reasonably priced, can get almost 3000 square feet of brand new house for $150k to $175k!

I dont care how old the house is, age is just a number.

You cannot afford to heat these houses, that is why they are ALL for sale. Waiting for a Florida sucker to come buy them.

Not allowed to include the garage in the SQ FT in advertising the sale of a house. False Advertisement. It is living space !!!

Then its total square feet, would be about 1800 living square feet. To be honest this arent a bad deal because of a huge lot and pool(can cost thousands to install) Yes prices are going down and this is why you can find that type of house for just under $200k. Bet prices have alot more to drop and not just in FL.

You will not last the winter..... 1k bet on it right now.

One night in NYC and your gone.
Not a good place to be. Been there many times and hope I neve have to go back.

Scare tactic a few of you use that does not work.
Yes, like you I watched the weather channel and you watched the snow and cold up here and can comment on it

Oh and without a/c I was soooooooooo miserable I couldnt even sleep!

Why is your A/c bill so high, poor house, bad insulation, holes in the walls??
Why? I see many use alternative energy sources to cool the homes, why cant you.

I felt physically ill from the heat.

Poor kid, wait until you get your toes and fingers frostbiten, one time and you wont do it again.

Snow can be fun, build lots of stuff in the snow.

Like What? A big freakin ball? Ohh I get it, an igloo..

Really, ask my 8 year old. One snowman and a couple runs down the hill with a sled and asked "when are we going to the beach to build a sandcastle, this is terrible"

Hey sir I will move aside and make room in FL for you. Will you make room in Ohio or somewhere up north for me?
Ohio welcomes anyone who loves to work hard, obey the laws and be friendly to others. We do not care if you are from Florida, Texas, Alaska, etc, your welcome here anytime.

Plenty of room up here, 42 men retired from my place of work last year and 35 of them are now in Florida, 6 are in Arizona and one stayed home because he worked until he was too damn old to enjoy life.
Your 25, better get a move on.
