Florida biggest cash asset is marijuana. Marijuana is Florida's largest cash crop and a potential for a huge increase in tax revenue regardless of Florida's war on drugs. Alas, Florida's biggest asset remains untouched and more troubling, the prohibition is based upon antiquated concerns of racism, bigotry and fear mongering. 13 other states have wised up, and 11 additional states will likely pass laws this years allowing those states to see a tax benefit. On the other hand, Florida will continue to spend hundreds of millions by enforcing a lost battle founded upon no scientific, economic, or social outrage.

I thought it was the 3rd largest cash crop.
I don't think it will ever overtake citrus.

Before I moved here, I worked the overnight shift from February to June in NY. I used to get hungry about 3 AM and wanted something to snack on. I couldn't eat junk food at that hour, so I bought oranges to eat just about every night. The oranges they sold in the supermarket in NY were from California, not Florida. VERY expensive at 4 for $7, but they were outrageously good. Large, juicy and sweet. I would rather pay more money for something that is very good. I don't care if they are cheaper, if they taste like cardboard, they will go in the garbage.

Sorry if I don't enjoy vacationing in your great state.

No disrespect maam/sir but why the heck are you here on this board then?
You don't live here, you don't vacation here, so why aren't you on your home state board giving out helpful info to people who wish to locate to what is it ?? I believe Minnesota ? Surely there must be a number of inquiries on that board.
Seriously some of us are trying to learn some things about the state, and this particular thread was yet again hi-jacked with answers that don't have a thing to do with the original question. Not that that's always a bad thing, but I am interested in knowing the true answers to the original question.

I have had plenty of past experience in Florida. Also, a friend bought a home at the height of the real estate bubble. He hates it there but cannot move out because he cannot sell his gosh-darn house. Worse yet, the expenses are gobbling up his retirement fund fast! Thanks for asking.

Eh. I've managed to escape from the real Deep South once, and would only return to it if the alternative was a cardboard box.
I like that I ended up in a place that may have Southern influences, but isn't too Southern.

Uhh... places like Raleigh and Asheville are in no way "Deep South" and far more progressive than the panhandle. Sorry. In fact, they are less "Deep South" than the panhandle for sure. And I'd bet Winston-Salem too. Greenville SC may be more Deep South than the panhandle due to it's large number of Christian (Baptist) universities. One thing you cant deny is the places I mentioned, especially Asheville and Greenville, not only are they gorgeous places that FL cant match, but they also have the quality people that make a place great. And FL (overall) is lacking in this department, as many of its long-time residents and natives have left the state and been replaced by malcontents.
And, Alpharetta GA has a larger income per capita avg than any city in FL (other than Jupiter Island and Palm Bch) and a higher percentage of college grads than any city in FL has.
