Your property taxes are lower Mike Peterson because you live in Weeki Wachee, which is in the middle of nowhere.

This really only has relevance if it has never happened in any other state.
Since I am sure someone has been misinformed about property tax at one time or another in every state that has property tax then this is really inconsequential.

I am sure there are also cases of buyer being uniformed about HOA fees and other costs in all states.

I highly recommend anyone who is considering moving to Florida to read this book first!
So, a story about working unskilled labor in the county with the highest cost of living in all of Florida.
Sounds like a real eye opener.

I moved to Orlando, lived there for 3 years, moved to San Francisco, kept the house, and recently (AUG 2008) moved to Boca Raton, FL. I enjoy experiencing life in new places and meeting new people though, it doesn't matter where I live, if I'm not tied down, I'd move again even if I lived in my favorite city.

We were talking about tax rates. From what I come up with it looks like Orlando's millage rate is 14 and where I live is 15.37. So on your premise that my taxes are lower because I am "in the middle of nowhere", that means that Orlando would be way out there.

I know, that doesn't make sense because we know that Orlando is not in the middle of nowhere. That must mean that your statement holds no water.

My statement holds water because housing in Weeki Wachee is much cheaper than the Orlando metro area, making your taxes much lower than a comparable home in Orlando.

And because I choose to have much more house for less money in an area I am happy with this must just make me a smart person.

Besides the fact that 2 homes of the same appraised value will pay slightly higher taxes here than in Orlando.

We were talking about tax rates though and I was showing how tax rates in Florida were lower than many other states.

Do you concur?

Yes this I know since I've lived in the midwest, NC and SC. When I first moved to NC, I wanted to go back home within 24 hours...just like a previous poster wrote you should give it 2 years. I did the 2 years in NC still disliked it as much as I did the 1st 24 hours I lived there, then moved to SC (job reason) and have been here 2 years. I still dislike it but like it more than NC.

The fried food thing is what got me. When I first moved down here, I literally lost 20 pounds, to the point my hair was falling out. I couldn't find any food I could tolerate, and had to start cooking again , which I detest. Then I couldn't find the things I needed in the grocery store. Alas, that's my issue, and I put no blame on NC or SC, but the person's statement about eating fried food and gaining weight to me is just as much if not more of a problem in NC and SC, I don't know about other Southern states as I've not lived there.

Quite frankly, I'm sick and tired of being told how all the Yankees have created every problem that exists in NC and SC till I could scream. How would you like to have a next door neighbor who came outside almost everyday screaming about some Yankee this or Yankee that? And you don't even want to hear what he says about Canadians, and Floridians. I can get over the bad food, I can get over the Christian good old boy attitude, but I can not get away from the rudeness, I have to hear every day. He is only one of many I have encountered down here with this attitude.

I'm over it, I'm over the lack of letting the Civil War go aside. So I have done my research, I know what parts of Florida are an extension of exactly what I dislike about this area of the US I live in, and I will take that into consideration when I move.

Many of my long time Ohio friends are starting to retire, some are going to Florida and buying homes but not only live there in the winter, some are staying year round. They so far all seem to be happy. None have given up and left back for home, unless it's only for the summer months. I just want nicer weather, and I want a more midwestern culture. No offense to the Southern states, but it just isn't my cup of tea.
