I plan on moving to Land O Lakes this summer however, I'm very concerned about all of the child abductions in the state of Florida. I know this stuff happens all over, but it seems like Florida has a major child abduction every few months. The boy in Collier County last month and yesterday on 2/11/2009 a girl from Putnam County was abducted this is not normal. I have live in Michigan for a long time and in the last 10 to 15 years the state of Michigan has had 3 abductions. Is Florida safe for children or is it a state full of child killers..... any opionions would be nice. thank you.

Florida is full of transients and lots of illegals. Just check out watchdog website and check areas before you move into them. Although you'll never really be safe from them anywhere. The community you live in can lower your chances.

When the child abductions stop being news, that's when you need to start worrying. Some parts of Florida have more crime than others of course, but overall it's no different than anywhere else in the country.

Is there such a thing as a minor child abduction?

Thanks for the reply. When I stated major abductions, I ment abductions by complete strangers and not abductions by the parents or grandparents....... I wish the usa would stop being so light on these types of crimes...... If you hurt or harm a child under 18 you should be locked up without the chance of parole.....

I dont think that the OP was suggesting that FL is really filled with child killers, but I think the OP may be wondering, "why is FL seem to be on the news a lot when these incidents occur?"

And if that indeed is the question/concern of the OP, I think it's valid. FL, and I think we can all agree, has a large share of these cases.

I remember in my Criminal Law class my professor, who was also a former DA, told us that the majority of murders are committed by someone the victim knows. This is especially true with child victims. Although these stranger abductions may make the headlines, the perp is usually a family member, neighbor, etc. Hopefully, we are not talking about a murder in this case. Just a comment on what he told us.

As far as more of these crimes happening in Florida, this professor also quoted (in NY) that more crimes are committed in the summer months than in the winter. I guess the criminals don't want to be outside either when it's 5 degrees outside with 2 feet of snow. Since Florida has warm weather year round, more "ideal conditions" for committing crimes. The transient nature of the state may also increase the same.
