What type of duck/bird are these?
I have lived in Florida my whole life and have never seen a duck/bird like this. Does anyone know what they might be? They are looking over a canal. They are about the size of a Mascove duck (sp???)

Thanks Tinman, I know they are not Muscovies, that is for sure. I sent them to a friend he thinks they are geese, and with a little googling they are Egyptian Geese http://www.ansi.okstate.edu/poultry/geese/ Now I wonder if they are someones pet that got out.

The population of feral Egyptian Geese is growing rapidly in South Florida. Last night from 6:00-8:00 p.m. there was a jamboree of 23 adult Egyptian Geese on the golf course outside my balcony in Pompano Beach, FL, just north of Fort Lauderdale. It was amazingly peaceful, no fights and no flights and very little honking. They walked around chatting quietly or swimming together for a while in the canal, but mostly grazing and chatting. Two years ago we had a total of nine, and earlier this year we had a total of fifteen: a pair, a trio, and a pair with eight offspring who are all adult sized now. But last night, lots of others also appeared; I don’t know where they came from. July 25, 2009

How did they end up in Florida?
Had they originally been in a zoo or something?
Maybe a hurricane...

^^^Not sure, but other parts of the US are spotting them too. They are really pretty geese.

They probably did not get here naturally. Unfortunately Florida is one of the worst places for exotic animals releases. People have things as pets and then release them when they tire of them or can no longer keep them. That's how we have so many iguanas, pythons, parakeets, muscovies, etc....just to name a few non-native species humans have introduced to Florida.

I just hope they don't breed like the Canadian geese do Up North. The last thing Florida needs is another exploding non-native anmal population.
