Default Destin for Spring Break with small children?

Hi, there!
We are trying to decide where to go for Spring Break (we will be driving from Texas) at the last minute, and I hear wonderful things about Destin. Is it over-run with college spring breakers, or is it fairly family friendly during March? I haven't heard of it as a big college Spring Break destination, but am quite out of the loop.
How is the weather in March? Is it too cold to play in the ocean?
What is a good resource to find a decent place to stay? We would prefer an apartment or condo with a small kitchen within a few blocks from the beach (it doesn't have to be ON the beach, per se, but would love if it were walking distance).
Thanks!

The Destin area is very family friendly. The Gulf is still a little chilly for me but our 18 yr. old puts on his shorty wet-suit to surf with no complaints. As a local property manager I've several options for you to check out. Start with your DM and we'll go from there.
I can't make any promises about the weather, but there's a reason that spring breakers come to the Gulf Coast... it's usually very nice. Mostly, the party crowd visits Panama City Beach and not really Destin so much.

Destin and the Beaches of South Walton do not get a ton of college kids because most of the rentals are condos that require the renter to be at least 25 years old.

A couple of the big condo management companies are:

Vacation Rentals, Vacation Homes, Condo Rentals - ResortQuest Vacation Rentals

Florida Gulf Coast Rentals ~ Southern Resorts ~ (800) 406-5714

Welcome to Cottage Rental Agency - Seaside Florida

Rivard Florida Vacation Rentals - Destin Beach Florida Real Estate, Condo Rentals, Destin FL Vacation Rental Properties, Emerald Coast, Seaside Vacation Cottages, Seagrove Florida Rentals, Grayton Beach Condominiums, Santa Rosa Beach Homes, Northwest

Many more turn up if you google Destin, Grayton Beach, Seagrove Beach, etc. plus 'rental'.

Instead of Destin, have you thought about Seaside or Grayton Beach? You might even want to check out Mexico Beach, as well. If you like to camp, there are quite a few wonderful campgrounds:

Sorry!

Here are the campgrounds:
Topsail Hill
Grayton Beach
Perdido Key

Just to name a few! Here is a link to the FL state park page with a listing of the parks in Northwest FL: Maps and Directions » Florida State Parks

And yes, it might be chilly, but it could also be warm. Bring a mix of warm and cold weather clothes with you!

BTW - Topsail Hill and Grayton Beach both offer cabin camping that is much cheaper than renting a condo!

Topsail Hill Cabins: Main Page - Topsail Hill Preserve State Park » Florida State Parks
Grayton Beach Cabins: Main Page - Grayton Beach State Park » Florida State Parks

And they have great ranger led programs that the kids might really enjoy...

When I'm researching a new place, I always look at a minimum of 3-4 different players in the area to get a more rounded perspective on it. Those were just the first couple off the top of my head.
