You dont have to argue, let the facts speak that other areas are more affordable than any part of FL. I know someone who left FL for Georgia and her salary went up almost $10k a year and houses cost 2/3 as much with lots twice as big.
TriMt7: Might as well not even try to teach him anymore. He is a kid without a job, lives on peanuts and thinks everyone else is too. Besides he is melting in your heat and won't last much longer. Problem is he won't be able to afford a home up north like he wants because we all work up here.....
NAF:
Yea, you showed me a larger cheaper house by comparison in Ohio on my thread and it was a total dump..........
When you compared and want to toss facts around please do us a favor, compare apples to apples and not dumps to beautiful homes, 10k per year more for probably more work, more responsibilities etc etc.
I already spoke with someone in my field who works in Mt. Dora and he makes 20k more then me, so does that mean something like you are stating to this poster? If so, I will retire early and make up the difference making that much more money per year. ( His COL and expenses by the way.. cause I already know your comeback, is less then mine and he sends his kids to private schools )
What was your friend doing in Fla and what is she doing now, do you have the job description to show us...
You told me in my thread it was too expensive to live in Fla, after more then 1 week of reseaching, there are ONLY a HANDFUL of places are more expensive to live then where I am.
Not all of Florida is what you say, get out of you house and look around for yourself.
OP
In my research, and I have done allot of it, Northern Florida can be quite less expensive then compared to South Florida, but again, all areas have differences, you have to give an take on what you want.
Right now we are looking at two areas that I can buy almost double my home space, 1 acre lot, good schools, low crime ( NAF loves to use the crime issue ), COL is lower then where I live, traffic is not that bad, etc etc
Lakeland and New Smyrna Beach areas are the two I have looked at the most.
Leaning towards Lakeland.. but other areas I like almost as well is Sebring ( older crowd but is becoming much younger ) Ocala ( may be too much traffic for me ? ) outside of Port Charlotte area and some others like Destin area etc ( Beautiful !! but to far north for my reasons to move to Fla.)
Some will scare you out of Florida but many who are good honest people will not and will help you more then you will know.
Speaking to someone who lives there really helps.
I have been on the phone will several who totally convinced me that a couple posters on this board are out of line and who have to much time on their hands
BTW, brother in law lives in Miramar area and read this board for the first time a few days ago and says he almost never sees what a few of these people post. So believe half of what you read about the negatives, cause they are sporadic if at all.

A M E N !!!!!!!!!!!! I certainly hope people reading this and thinking of moving here understand that.
I also totally agree with your comment about a few posters with too much time on their hands...wish *one* in particular would just DO SOMETHING already. If that poster spent as much time proactively working towards their goal of owning a home as they do trolling the net they'd be way ahead of the game. Heh.
I'm not going to have to rehash with you the inverse relationship between "home prices" and "jobs, culture, educational, health, and entertainment" opportunities again..... AM I?!
Hmmmm. So that would imply that the Miami area leads in "jobs, culture, educational, health, and entertainment" opportunities", wouldn't it? Entertainment, yes, health care don't know, but jobs, culture and education???
Thank you FloridaBound and Firefawn, again, some of the things posted around here really freak me out, expecially since we are moving down from Illinois so it seems so far, we just dont want to make a horrible mistake and find ourselves being attacked my giant cockroaches or living in Ghetto-ville, lmbo!
I'm pretty sure he's 25.... a couple months older than I am! But thanks, sometimes I feel old up here in this college town with the average of of 20, lol.

The Miami area has entertainment, dining, shopping, travel opportunities.
Miami has Jackson Memorial, considered one of the best hospitals in the US.
Miami has a few colleges and Universities, including University of Miami.
And as far as JOBS are concerned, it depends on your trade and profession, really. Like Las Vegas, it's touristy, so there are a lot of low wage service jobs for the unskilled. But for professionals in banking, law, medicine, opportunities abound.
Culturally, you can't get more diverse than Miami.... Latin cultures, Europeans, Americans, Caribbeans, Asians..... if you can't find culture in Miami, you aint looking hard enough!!
Miami is a bit of an anomaly given its status as "Capital of Latin America" and the influx population. Now, a lot of Miami-Dade is AWFUL in terms of crime, scenery, and decay, but that's urban living for you!
And as for complaining about "Miami weather vs. LA" weather as NAH did, Miami is often cooler than other parts of the state and country in the summer because of the sea breeze. It's basically just consistent. AND unlike LA, nary a smog day to be had! (Though I wasn't impressed by LA anyway! It's much nicer on TV... much like Miami and New York!)

If you thought that $50k home in Ohio was a dump, you havent seen those $150k dumps in Florida. The Ohio "dump" is twice as big and has a basement.
http://www.visitoilcity.com/leavefl/justinsane.jpg (broken link)
This south Florida dump costs $125k to $175k
I compared a Florida dump to something much better in Ohio. This is not apples to apples because the Ohio house is twice as big and four times as nice.
You dont know how to look around if you only found a handful of places more expensive. I am just trying to help you sir. I know you already made your mind to live in north Florida and this is your choice if you want to pay around $200k to get a house you consider nice. I would never pay anywhere near that much even if I won the lottery because I know about 100 other places that are cheaper and just as nice if not nicer in my opinion.

You don't know a thing about the location of this home. Didn't you comment on the other thread about home prices cheaper in Detroit than cars?

No. Maybe he needs more in his life than you do in order to survive than just the warm glow of a computer screen and the internet.
You who purport to be an expert ignore the KEY of real estate that everybody else knows: LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. A $350k studio apartment in Manhattan is priced that way for a reason.

Have you ever even BEEN to North Florida? IT IS NOT A MONOLITHIC AREA!!!! If he wanted to move out to some Florida equivalent of Oil City, 2 hours from anything and the only commerce of note being the Super Wal-Mart, there are plenty of little towns that he could probably get lots of land and house for less than a townhouse in South Florida.

You might have certain "hobbies" and "collections" that other people wouldn't spend money on. Some people make different value judgments with how to spend their time and money. And then you can report back to us all with the details.
I anxiously await your move to Oil City, where the REAL WORLD reality of owning a huge, drafty, old house hits (with basement! Cause lord knows one person needs a basement AND an attic AND 4 bedrooms!) you hard.
I also notice you have made a website trying to raise money to get to oil city. I have a friend in retail management that is hiring right now in your area. PM me your contact info and I can try to hook you up. By WORKING a job for like, a month, you will have saved enough money to take your trip. So let's talk.
AVG WAGE IN THIS THE TOWN YOUR POST A PICTURE OF IS 23k per year.
No one can afford a 53k house on 23k per year.

Well, you got me...... You are the one who posted the Ohio homes that were a good buy and they are about to be condemed.
Actually I am waiting on people like you to lose your 250k home so I can come in and pay 50-75k cash for it.
I do not need a basement !! Why do you keep harping on a basement.
If I need space I will just buy the next house over and convert it into a large family room or garage....
Your in paradise little guy and dont even know it.
House you speak of are 50%-75% overpriced and your using that analysis to compare. Once the houses drop like rocks and get back to actual value is when people like me will come in and buy about anything we want.
See what working the same job for 30 years is going to get me at age 49... anything I want, whether its in Florida or Ohio, maybe I will be a heat bird and go back and forth.. Ya never know.
You are so good at research why do you sit in your house all day, those kind of jobs pay 100k per year here and you can buy that 54k house in Zanesville.
Now do me a favor, show me some homes in Florida that were 250k and are now or can be bought for 125k cash. Seems there is going to be allot of them soon.
Ohhh that house you posted in Ohio will run you 400 per month to heat it for 9months and 300 per month to cool it for 3 months. You couldnt afford it.
While you are at it, pull me up some REAL homes in Dublin, Ohio and compare them to any part you want in FLA... pictures too now...
Not in Drug Town USA Zanesville, Ohio where all YOUR imported drugs end up to be sold to kids.
