eh... You live in Canada now? I might not worry about it...

I got a 650 CDN ticket in Quebec for having a radar detector (wasn't speeding, just had a detector)... haven't been back. Never paid it, don't ever plan to...They also confiscated the detector so that pissed me off enough and didn't feel like I should owe them any money for their big brother government B.S. policy

this is with Florida tags. And I also feel I got pulled over for Florida tags... considering I have been pulled over every single time I have driven out of the country in Mexico as well ... they are probably like oh, Florida, you must be running drugs or something.

If I ever did want to go back, I'd just say I sent it, must have got lost... if you don't want to let me in, fine... if you want me to pay it to go back in... OK, sure I'll pay it now, no biggie.

If you are asking if foreign countries prey on foreign tourists... YES! the police and the citizens. I have been harassed, detained, arrested in several countries for just being a white american... I just figure it comes with the territory.

I have visited many foreign countries, and have never been arrested, detained or harrassed in any of them. Sometimes it's the way you carry yourself and treat the citizens and law enforcement in your host country that makes a difference.

If you break the law in any country, you need to suffer the consequences. Arriving at the border and being turned away could end up being very costly when you lose the cost of your vacation package/plane tickets over a lousy speeding fine.

I have driven in both Mexico and Canada and never had any problems.

Note many countries I have traveled to and lived in are 3rd world countries which are definitely not touristic, i.e. throughout africa and the arab world. Trust me, its nothing I'm doing, they just think I have money. Have had some minor issues down in Mexico too though. Also the rule of odds...when gone for 6+ months at a time something bound to happen.

Then you aren't comparing apples to apples. I wouldn't consider Canada a 3rd world country...

No, I'm not, I just "unlucked out" there and got pulled for having a radar... Only other place I know of (in hindsight) you can't have one is in DC.

I don't believe it has to be a third world county. I use to date someone who lived in NY and drove a mustang. I lived in NJ. He got pulled over at least once per trip if not more when he reached my area. I'm not sure if it was the car or more then likely the plates. IMO out of state plates is what draws the police to take notice they want to know what your doing there.

Actually they are illegal in the entire state of VA as well. Just having one within the passenger compartment of your vehicle--even if it's not turned on or nounted on the dash--will get you a ticket.

If you aren't trying to break the law by speeding, you don't need one. Just slow down, save a life.

I lived in both NJ and NY for over half of my life and drove weekely between the two from both sides of the border depending on which state I was living in at the time for over 15 years, and never once was I pulled over in either state. My guess is that it was the Mustang, not the tags that got him pulled over.

Ahh gotcha, well was close.
The sad thing is, it wasn't even my radar detector, my stepdad gave it to me for a road trip :/
Sometimes cops will pull you over if you are just going a little bit over though, in that case a radar detector could come in handy to not get a ticket even if you aren't trying to speed, esp on a 5000 mile trip when you are going through like 100 counties.
