...What do you do about the mail? Do you just stop it, or have it forwarded? I know you can only forward mail up to a maximum of a year.

The post office will NOT deliver to an empty home. You will have to have it forwarded or get a P.O. box.

When our home was a second home, we got a box at the UPS Store. They would call me if we got anything that looked to be other than junk mail and I could decide to have them forward it or not. A few times it was six weeks or more between visits, so I had them send all the mail to me.

It was easy and convenient, and reasonably priced for a small box. They would also automatically send your mail once a week, once a month, whatever you wanted.

The house next door is a second home to the owners, and I watch it. I bring in the mail and if I see something important (car registration for the car they keep here for example) I put it in an envelope and mail it to them. If you know your neighbors, that might be an option as well.
